7mm copper core spark plug wires should be fine, but if you're worried you can get factory wire from most OMC dealers and/or NAPA autoparts stores. Here's a link that can walk you through an entire ignition rebuild. It's for a different model than yours, but all the steps are the same. Keep us posted.

....btw, since you're going to the trouble to rebuild the ignition, I would install a lanyard kill switch while you're at it too. That way if you fall out of the boat the motor will die and you'll live. This is the one I've used on 3-4 motors now and they all work great, cheap, are super easy to install and provide a much needed layer of safety. It has both the push button stop/kill feature as well as the lanyard kill feature. The new kill switch will fit into the same spot as the old, factory kill switch, so you shouldn't have to cut any new holes or anything.

Here's a pic of the one I put on my '61 10 hp. It took about 5 minutes to install and works like a charm.

I think you can just install it near the key ignition for the controls. once installed it would work the same way. you could either push the button and/or remove the lanyard to kill the motor, or turn it off with the key as usual. I'll try to find a schematic for you.

i have 2 of theese motors.. you should have 3 wires all connected together on the points
1 coil 1 condenser and 1 cut out switch and on the other point set 1 coil 1 condenser and 1 kill switch

I've always wondered why people can't rotate pictures to the correct postion, before they post?

My arm is getting tired from setting the monitor on it's side :D

Re: new to me 40hp johnson 1969? stuck in gear

excellent thanks for that. i was talking more about where 1 wire comes from a point to the kill switch, and 1 wire goes from the other point to a cut out switch?
the cut out switch wires were all cut when i bought this thing, so im not 100% sure of how to reconnect them.
i believe 1 of these wires from the points goes to the kill switch via the vacuum switch?
in regards to the pics coming up sideways i dunno its just the way the pc sorts it out when i upload them lol.
many thanks to everyone.

"i believe 1 of these wires from the points goes to the kill switch via the vacuum switch?"
correct!

One wire comes off one set of points and goes to the center post of the cut-out switch, then another wire comes off the center post of the cut-out switch and goes to one side of the kill button, or to one of the "M" terminals on the ignition switch. The other wire from the other set of points goes directly to the other side of the kill button or to the other "M" terminal on the ignition switch.

yup. you hold have one wire from each set of points that connect to the "M" posts on the kill switch. You'll need to put a little crimp-on eye on the end of the wires that gets screwed the the post and a crimp-on female connector to attach it to male posts on the backside the kill switch. You should be able to find them at any auto parts/electronics store. This pic may help.

Re: new to me 40hp johnson 1969? stuck in gear

Thanks for all the help guys. i have just installed my new coils and tune up kit consisting of condensors and points all the way from the USA. i have also installed the thicker core solid copper ignition wires so we will see if they work or not. i was worried if they would 'resist' too much, but im not really too clued up on electronics. thats why i bought this motor!
anyway, im buying new spark plugs while im at it. the service manual says i need j4j plugs, and the champion website suggests j4c plugs as a replacement.
can anybody confirm or suggest what i should be buying?

J4C, or J6C if you do a lot of trolling/slow speed operation.

yup Champion J4C or J6C are fine. Here's a handy link that can walk you through rebuilding the ignition. It's for a different model than yours, but the process is the same. That's part of the charm of these old OMC motors, once you can fix one, you can pretty much fix them all. Keep us posted. Holler if you get stuck.

added all my new parts. coils, tune up kit, new plugs, spark plug wires and connectors.
gapped points, removed plugs and turned the flywheel with a rope.
got spark on both cylinders. im very happy with that.
