good deal on the pulling issue

thanks man. i know. i was worried. i was trying to pull it in the boat. i have never pull started a motor before.once i jumped out of the boat, the motor was at shoulder height and i can pull it fine now. i wouldnt mind changing these wires if only i can get the motor running. if even once. im gonna try again tomorrow with premix squirted into the cylinders in case its a fuel blockage or something.
also im in the UK so i dont have a 'tracker' whatever that is , but thanks for looking and adding suggestions. there are no stupid questions after all!

Sorry. Typo. I meant "Tractor Supply" store. It's a hardware/farm supply store here in the states. Here's a link that probably won't help you since you're in the UK but maybe others can benefit from it. I bought one of these and have used it to replace the plug wires on my two fleetwins and my fastwin. They're perfect. Solid copper core with the boots already attached.

have you tried finding a BRP dealer through the BRP website? I'm almost certain they list them worldwide.....any of them can get, or should have on hand, the 7mm. hyphalon sparkplug wire

I've had luck getting 7m copper core wires at NAPA and Carquest auto parts stores. You may also want to check some small engine shops that work on lawnmowers, weedeaters, etc...

OK. to add to it all i have sheared the flywheel key. i now can see i simply did not have it torqued enough. my mistake. thankfully it came out easy enough. after a quick search on the forum! i tapped it out with a parallel punch. so now i have to wait to get a new one.

Here's a link to an internet article on OMC "Big Twins"
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/04/s/columns/max/15/index.cfm

Sounds like your '61 40 hp is known for shearing flywheel keys. I recall reading somewhere (but I can't find it) that OMC increased the torque spec for the flywheel on the 40hp Big Twins because of it. Anybody have the proper torque spec?

Here's the specific quote from the article: "There are some Big Twins that I would recommend that you avoid; 1960 and 1961 were the first two years of the 40 hp version and had some major stuctural problems; i.e. a reputation for shearing flywheel keys and even breaking crankshafts. Because of these problems, the powerhead for the 40 was completely re-designed for 1962, and the '62s and later 40's are very good engines."

Sorry I can't help you with the size of the nut but the torque spec for the flywheel on your 40 hp '61 is 100-105 foot pounds.

Ok my flywheel key arrived today and it seems a lot smaller than it should be! I don't suppose it deforms when torqued up??? Unless they have sent me the wrong key in the correct part number bag?? I'm a bit annoyed as it took a while to get here and the shipping cost more than the key itself. I'll see if I can post a pic of the new key next to the old sheared key. Also when inserted into the shaft it looks small.

Re: new to me 40hp johnson 1969? stuck in gear

so i bolted the outboard to the transom today, pulled it and i could pull it ok. i removed the plugs and squirted some premix in the cylinders, pulled again and she fired a little, followed by a loud backfire then she died.
pulled a few more times and no luck. then i removed the plugs and squirted fuel in again, pulled it and it fired right up! i revved it a bit, the hit the cut off as i had no water in the barrel.
i could not get it going after that, but im very pleased it fired up, and sounded so smooth too. im thinking maybe i flooded it after that as i kept pulling until my arm nearly fell off and it still wouldnt fire again.

Hi root. Sounds like you're getting closer :) If it ran for a few secs, then we can get her running full time. If there was gas coming out of the from t of the carb, then that means it's flooding which is most likely due to a stuck float needle in the carb. It's pretty common. All you need to do is remove the carb, take of the bowl and check that the little needle attached to the float is able to move through its entire range of motion without getting stuck, or hung up. The little, thin wire that holds it in place can get kinked sometimes too. Here are some handy carb links too.

(scroll about half way down for info on the float needle. Give this a try and holler back. You're almost there :) !!! )

Re: new to me 40hp johnson 1969? stuck in gear

ok i removed the carb, and it was FULL of fuel when i turned it upside down. so i checked the little needle and it is free and appears to move up and down fine. i have left the bottom half 'bowl'? to soak in cleaning solvent overnight, and i will clean it out and reassemble tomorrow and try again. thanks for all the help folks, hopefully getting closer.
