Re: new to me 40hp johnson 1969? stuck in gear

ok i pulled it gain today time after time, and only once did it seem to want to start, but didnt quite start. i had a lot of fuel coming from the lower water intake grill. i was also squrting fuel premix into the cylinder directly. any ideas?

If I recall, some unburnt fuel mix will seep out around the lower unit on these old OBs.

Make sure you always have water in the barrel for coolant when you test run, or you'll fry the impeller.

you got it. always test it in water. thanks for checking in. i refitted the carb and tried to pull it again. it nearly started more times today, but still no luck.
i must be missing something. it has plenty of compression. good spark when plugs are pulled. im not sure if i have the carb setup correctly. what does the brass screw on the front of the carb do? any other 'adjustments' i could have wrong? many thanks.

i have taken apart the carb and cleaned it, rebuilt it and it seems to try to start once or twice. but it still wont start. i had it going the one time, and i quickly stopped it by shorting the wires together as i didnt have it submerged in water . i wish i hadn't turned it off that time as it hasn't fired since. it still has spark. the plugs are 'dirty' and wet when i pulled them. im feeling kind of defeated. does anybody have any suggestions of what i should do next? kinda down because i installed all new ignition parts and it still wont fire. im going to back out and try again today, but i cant think of anything different to try??

compression, spark, fuel, in the right amounts arriving at the right time is about it...check each off the list by verifying..at least 1/4" open air gap spark jump...you can squirt fuel mix in the carb throat then choke and it should at least attempt to fire...make certain you haven't sheared the flywheel key....what torque did you set the flywheel nut to?

HI root. Have you tried removing/replacing the kill switch circuit. You may want to remove it entirely from the points for now and get the motor running. You can always kill the motor by turning the throttle all the way down. Once you've got it running, you can pop the flywheel off one more time and install a new push-button/lanyard kill switch like the one in the epic below. I've used them on all my motors and they work great, only cost about $10, and install in about 10 min. Be patient and methodical. You're almost there. You'll get it.

This when i took the carb apart. this was behind the rich/lean 'pin'. im not sure if it was dirt or crud or an old washer of some type, but i removed it anyway.
now the rich/lean 'pin' (or is it a needle?) is much more loose or free to turn.

And that's why it wont start. You have thrown away the packing on the slow speed needle and now it's leaking air in and not sucking fuel. The needle is supposed to be hard to turn, that's what makes the seal.

+1. You need those packings to form a nice tight seal around the needles. However, the do where out over time and should be replaced every time you rebuild the carb. They come standard in all carb kits. You can get a carb kit right here at iboats for about $20. Here's a pic and a link on how to do the rebuild.
