Mark,
I know the manual is a chunk of change but it will save you some headaches in the future.
The KA carbs are easy to rebuild and if you had a sticking float you may want to consider doing so. the kit is avaiable on iboats.com, oldmercs.com or marineengines.com. A HarborFreight Ultrasonic cleaner and Pine-Sol is a great way to get the crud out of the carbs during the rebuild.

You can find a free manual here but buying the original is by far the way to go. Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

Also, here is a link to what I,m doing with my 1963 Merc. http://forums.iboats.com/mercury-mariner-outboards/1963-mercury-500-50hp-502802.html

Okay, so my engine is missing the two screws. Water is inside there because there's no screws to keep it out. I'm going to have to find those screws, some gear oil (90 weight???) and maybe some plugs wires. Thank you so much!

Lower Unit Lubricant is VERY specific stuff. A smoked lower can be quite expensive.

Thank you bgc! Man, you are not holding back on your 50 horse. That's going to turn out real nice!

I've been very busy and haven't been able to work on the boat for a couple days. I'll check out that manual and see if it will help with my issues or not. I'm hoping to get to work on it a little tomorrow. I'll post up my progress or lack thereof. :)

I'm in Wilmington, Ohio. I have two lakes within 20 minutes of me. Cowan Lake and Ceasar's Creek Lake.

The manual that you linked me to is very helpful. THANK YOU! I believe that my engine has the points system after reading a little last night. So if that's the case, then the points may very well be a reason for my ignition troubles.

I started to work on the boat today and it started to rain. So I covered it up and then the rain stopped. Rather than play "lets see how many times Mark will cover and uncover the boat", I just went in the house. :) I'll tinker with it after work throughout the week.

I'll be sure to let you know what the problem is if/when I find it.

Welcome to the NLA world. No Longer Available from Mercury. Be very careful when you work on the magneto. Most of the parts are NLA and the parts suppliers charge a leg, an arm and and any other dangling body parts they can get. Plus a pile of cash. Google "mercury 393-1504A11". A couple of ebay hits:

Mercury 393 1504A11 393 1504A5 393 1326A3 Contact Set MB | eBay

Mercury Quicksilver Breaker Assy Points P N 393 1504A5 393 1504A10 393 1504A11 | eBay

Mark,
Post a pic of the points, most of the time they are OK and just need some crocus cloth to clean them up. Change the condensers, bad condensers lead to burned points.

marineengine.com or Ferguson-Poole, Inc.

Those on ebay are much better priced! Thanks for the links! I'll try to be careful.

I'll post up pics when I get to work on it again. It's raining here today. Tomorrow I'll have to cut grass after work, so I may get to work on it Tuesday evening or Wednesday. Thanks for the tip on the condensers!

Re: New to me boat-1965 650E 65hp Need some help :(

I worked late, got home and started the mower. It broke down. I just totally cleaned the carb last week. SO I put a different carb on and cut the grass.

It was raining the entire time. I decided to blow the horn on the boat before going in. The battery was dead. The engine shroud shorted out 0n the solenoid and burned a nice spot on the shroud. The solenoid is toast. Hooked the battery up to the charger backwards. Finally realized what I did after a couple minutes.

Decided to tilt the engine up and the fuel connector blew apart. I think I found all of the pieces and have it back together correctly, but it needs an epoxy to keep it together it seems.

Not a successful day by any stretch of the imagination. I still have the original problem, plus some.

Tomorrow's another day. Perhaps it'll go a little better, I hope.
