Just be careful about what you read on the Internet and hear from people in general about various boats. They are all pretty much the same in terms of how they are built. It is analogous to comparing Ford's versus Chevy's, etc., particularly after 10+ years of prior ownership.

Yup. I was surprised to read that my Four Winns is an 'entry level price point' boat. It isn't, but no offense taken. The opinions expressed on this board are worth every penny of what you paid for them.

Current condition is what matters. As for Wellcraft being out of business, so is Maxum. It doesn't matter. You won't get 'factory support' on a 10 year old boat anyway.

I feel a bit more secured toward my bias feeling for the wellcraft already. :)

We'll see how it goes today.

Yes, there are very few boat companies that provide support 10+ years after the sale and also to 'resale' owners. I know Formula does, because I ask them questions on occiassion and they get back to me in a couple of days with the answers.

Maybe SeaRay, since they probably have one of the bigger customer bases out there? Not sure about others though . . . :noidea:

Used boats questions probably engine related mostly, right?

How you like yours so far? You bought it some time last year right? Did you compare the different between a 240 & a 250?

We already scheduled to go check out boats tomorrow. And my wife was raising a concern about our kids being too young (2 & 4) to be on the boat for safety reason (no seat belt and stuff). I told her we would mostly cruise at lower speed. I'll read more in the forum for this and might start a different thread asking how others with young kids enjoy their boating life. Make me think a bit with ... 5% discourage. Hehehe.

Love our 250 - 240 is the same layout but not sure where the difference is - Maybe 6" in the cockpit & 6" in the cabin? - We use the camper canvas ALOT when staying on it (full camper not the "fastback") with the table up top it is perfect for the 4 of us playing games or just talking - The face to face seating around the table sold me on it. I am sure there are other boats with this arrangement but in this length of boat this is the one that worked for us.

Hai, Of all the boats you mentioned you wanted to know about all things being equal what brands were better than others. The sea ray and the maxum are the 2 best made of the 4. Wellcraft went bankrupt in 2010 and was bought out by an investment group so who knows what type of support they will or will be able to offer down the road should you need it. (plus those cracks in the fiberglass on the bow send up a huge red flag to me. (think structural) Four wins is an O.K. boat but it is an entry level price point boat like the Bayliner. Maybe one step up. Also don't worry about who makes what. Brunswick Marine is the parent group of Searay, Bayliner and many others. They also make Million dollar boats and own Mercury Marine. (Mercruiser) Bottom line I would rule out Wellcraft for sure and Four winns unless it is the exception to the rule. Decide on one of the other two and have a surveyor check it out top to bottom. Thats about the best you can do with the decision making process. Keep in mind that any boat of that vintage is going to need regular maintenance and updates and upgrades going forward. There is no free ride in this sport... Best of luck! let us know how it turns out and keep the questions coming. The more you know the better decision you can make.

As already noted by others there are some things that aren't quite "true" here.

Maxum was discontinued. It was a step up from Bayliner, and step "below" Sea Ray. Brunswick is/was the parent company of all 3.

Four Winns is owned by the same company as Wellcraft and is typically viewed as direct competition to Sea Ray on terms of quality and ammenities.

Wellcraft has had a couple of owners over the past several years, so has Four Winns. That should really not be an issue. Both brands still exist and both used the major suppliers that most all of the boats of the era used.

All the brands mentioned are good quality brands. All of them are worthy of consideration.

Absolutly true.
Wellcraft used to be built in VA. They basically have gotten out of the crusier platform and more of a fish/day boat.

I had a SeaRay before the current boat (288 FourWinns). In my opinon the SeaRay is way overpriced for what you get or don't get compared to the FourWinns. I would be hard pressed to buy a Searay again because there are just as good if not better boats out there for less money. Regardless of what you get used it will depend how well it was maintained

Wellcraft's were built in Sarasota, Florida until 2008.
