I have a 1967 starcraft jupiter that I am restoring. I am very new to boats so sorry in advance. I am currently in the process of prepping the hull to paint. There is a hole about 5 ft from the front of the boat on the bottom that is about a 1 cm in diameter and is in the center(pointy part) of the bottom. It is a perfect circle so it makes me think maybe it should be there. Just would like to know before i plug it if its needed. Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

Re: newbee question

Welcome Coop and don't apologize for asking honest questions. The hole you see is on the center keel on the bottom. Yeah all the boats have them. I don't know the reason but I'm sure someone here will be able to tell you why. Did you strip the paint off or rough it up to be painted over? If its to the bare aluminum, make sure you prime it with zinc chromate first to protect the metal. Good luck and lets see some pics.

Hey welcome!

So ya, we'll need a photo of it. Along with all the other angles of your boat so we can check it out! (scheming for photos, sorry)

The guys around here are great help and I am certain you can find the infor you need from this super cool group!

Cheers!

The keel isn't water tight so no need to patch the hole.

I believe the keel and the strakes on these boats are merely "appendages".

Agreed^^^ also the 'weep' holes will prevent any chance of it freezing for those in the northern areas and allow some flush-out for salt water folks...well, that's my story & I'm sticking with it ;)

Re: newbee question

sounds great I will not plug it. I just "lifted" the boat last night. I made a wooden plate that I attached to my auto jack and lifted one side at a time, back then front. I placed 4 - 4"x4"x12" boards on the bunks to lift the boat up to be painted underneath while still on the trailer. I was very proud of my accomplishment at the end of the night to get it lifted up with no help. Am going to try and wash it real good this evening and then maybe prime the bare aluminum spots if there is still light out. I will also try and snap some pictures :)

Coop--

welcome, and remember that there are no stupid Qs so don't be afraid to ask. there are a few that have been asked & answered in which case we may suggest you run a search....but ask away!

i think it's correct that these are drain holes. my Lone Star tinnie also has em, both in the keel and in the side reinforcing strakes
