Re: newbie needing opinions

I had a similar Starcraft. Mine did 33 mph with a similar vintage 60hp Evinrude. I agree with the above poster though. The tri-hull I have now is a much smoother ride. I think it has mostly to do with weight. The Starcraft was so light it would get thrown around pretty good, although I never had problems with swamping, etc. in 2' - 3' waves. Just a rough ride.

after reading this post.. I have a question suppose I am going to buy a boat for the great lakes area... and want a V hull... what would you all suggest as the smallest length and motor size in order to feel safe on the lake in say "light" chop?

Depends what your definition of "light chop" is. The little puddle of a lake I take my shallow v boats out on can get rough enough to be what I'd call light chop. But light chop for the next guy might be 2' waves.

Re: newbie needing opinions

Being new to the forum and fairly new to boating I'm wondering what more experience people's opinions are on this boat. As for sale value and handling in the water, I'm looking for something that can handle fairly large water.

Just what are you calling Big Water , look at what the boat is it Aluminum , my brother had an aluminum Starcraft and it was a very light boat and on windy days it was NOT heavy enough to handle Tampa Bay waters it was great on calm days but it was just not heavy enough to maintain its course in rough waters, it would get blown around to easily if it is a fberglass boat still look at the height of your gunwales , the sides , I have grown up on boats and would not take that boat out except in calm water , it would be fine for 3 or 4 people on a calm day but it is Not designed for rough weather period . If you want to go in "big water" you should be in a deep Vee Hull and have at least 21 ft and I prefer 25 or 26 ft of fiberglass vessel under your butt.

And then some. Motor punched .030, everything from the crank up is balanced, reed kit, 140hp carbs, etc. If'n ya ever make it down this way I'll take ya for a ride. Though the Gulf can sometimes get a lil nasty like the great lakes?

Holy crap, that looks great. My mom lives in venice, I may invite myself along next time I get down there!

Re: newbie needing opinions

What i am calling big water is, bays and island areas of the great lakes and a the st. marys river a connecting water way. The water can be rough and big just having to watch the weather for when to go out. what i don't want is to decide on a boat and find out that i will only be limited flat water to get out.

I believe everyone has helped me decide on this boat, that it would not quite fit what i am looking to do but is close.

Starcraft is a great boat BUT I would check if that is an electric shift motor. If it is I would advise that you pass on the deal.
