Re: Newbie: Swapping a blown engine ( 1985 4.3L) Compatible?
I just had the same problem and had to rebuild my engine. All the outer accessories will need to be swapped (obviously), as well as the marine cam and flywheel. You will also need to use your old oil pan for reasons that will become clear when you pull the engine. Keep your carb attached to the intake and swap it straight over. You'll need to pull the drain valves out of the old block to install in the new one. Remove the exhaust studs for re-use as well. Your marine distributor will need to be used along with the timing cover, water pump and fuel pump.
Bottom line is this; everything from the old engine comes to the new one except heads, crank and pistons. When you re-ring the new one (which you should), the crank doesn't necessarily need to be removed.
As for the year??? I used a 4.3L from a newer Monte Carlo and had no problems. Good luck!
