thanks glastron. pretty sure i burnt the switch box up. i put the red power wire that goes to the rectifier on the switch box were the kill switch goes.... ooops.

update. i put a new switch box on it and rectifier and it runs good. but ive since upgraded to a hydrostream viper with a 115. beteer family boat then the invader. un fortunately i removed the lower unit to change the shift shaft seal that was leaking and cant seam to get it into forward any more. thoughts??

What year is the motor? This method will work on the engines that use a turning shift shaft:
Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning propshaft --
do not shift into reverse unless you turn the propshaft at the same time.
If it is in N go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing with control in N.

it is a 1972 500. the problem i think lies in the bottom. unless theres only one way to putt them together. i pulled the shift shaft out and heard a gear clang around. my merc tech pulled the unit apart to get it back together. is it possible hes one tooth off?

when i dropped the unit i had a seal leaking at the shift shaft. not knowing any better pulled the shaft out... heard the jingle jangle. it very close just not popping in all the way. i can here the gears just touching each other..

The LU is in forward with no pressure on the shift cam it goes into N with a turn of few degrees of the shaft, then a few degrees more puts it into reverse.
If you pulled the shiftshaft out then you dropped the C clip holding the shaft and pulled it out of the shift cam usually you have to pull the bearing carrier out; find and remove the C-clip and put the cam back on the shaft as in this picture.

LU shift shaft may have moved , drop lu again ,put control in F, and set lu shift shaft to F .
appologise for reply , other post didnt show up until after i replied

ive tried everything short of disassembling the lower unit. i think its toast. it goes into gear but i can stop it with my foot running in gear. its worn out...

When you pulled out the shift shaft the cam and snap ring retainer fell off the bottom.

The shift shaft retainer nut (with the seal) needs to come off so you can get the cam and snap ring out of the lower and reinstall it correctly on the shaft.
