the wife likes to watch the six oclock news, i wont, its all bad news, bad luck, car accidents, etc etc. if there was a news show in your area that only dealt with "good news" events, would anyone watch? or is it human nature to be fixated on the misfortunes of others?

I suspect that if there was a viable market for a good news station (or even program), they would be out there and going strong .... to me that indicates there isn't

Re: news broadcasts...doom and gloom

Considering the quality of programming on commercial TV in the evening, "doom and gloom" is a step up.

Bad news is professional gossip and it travels fast.

Just like if you have a good experience at buying something .....you tell someone......... a bad experience and you tell everyone!

It is a learned reaction.

It is kinda funny you should bring this up.

A couple of days ago me and Wimusky were talking about how people around this site were getting sorta edgey, We came to the conclusion that between the end of boating season and fall/winter approaching and all the political rabble rousing on TV and the news, there was alot of things that just depressed the heck out of everyone!!

If there was a good news program it would be 5 minutes of good news and 25 minutes of commercials... there's just not that much good news around these days.

Wow, verbatim! Of coarse, the main reason being the end of boating for a bunch of us..... Hate to bring up the weather, but, that's what us northeners do! High of 74? tomorrow, 44? Saturday with rain/sssssssnow mix............

I think the OP is right. If there was nothing but good news, nobody would watch. Will never have to worry about that, however. I've been watching more local than the same ol', same ol' national news lately. There's plenty of doom and gloom locally. A thrill kill of a 90+ year old women. And this is small town stuff. On a positive side, they do have Tuesday Tails where they feature a dog or cat for adoption! They had a 7 month old puppy today. Ahhhh, he was so cute. They switch off each week.......

"the end of boating season and fall/winter approaching"

Well, right there is all the bad news you need. Everything else is fluff.

Don't watch the news much. Listen to the local stuff on the way to work. That's more than enough for me.

Hey now, careful with the S word!

It's been pretty well documented and scientifically proven that one lives longer when they avoid watching the news.

Re: news broadcasts...doom and gloom

When I was a pup (thirty years ago) we had a newspaper editor in our church. I once asked him why there was so much bad news all the time. It seemed every page in the paper was covered with reports of crime and deprivation and why did they want to worry people like that? He told me that when bad news becomes so commonplace it's no longer news; that's when we should really worry. I've often thought of that conversation. It does seem as though there's a lot of bad news in the world, and clearly there is. As long as we continue to spin around in orbit that will be the case. What we didn't have twenty years ago that we have now is media saturation, so the question is, do we have more bad news now or just more exposure to it? Clearly we have the latter, but the former? I honestly don't know.

Re: news broadcasts...doom and gloom

^^^^^ You may want to add that 30 years ago we were a lot younger and really didn't care too much with what was going on in the world or even the next town. Now that we're much older, we look at the world/news a little differently....... We seem to pay attention a whole lot more.....

ps. I misspoke, the chance of ssss*** is coming already tomorrow nite....

The news is based on sensationalism.
Just my thoughts.

Ahhhh, a classic by Don Henley...

I make my living off the Evening News
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
It's interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough love
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down

Kick 'em when they're up
Kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff
Kick 'em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do "The Innuendo"
We can dance and sing
When it's said and done we haven't told you a thing
We all know that Crap is King
Give us dirty laundry!

Re: news broadcasts...doom and gloom

Like anything, it comes down to your point of view I guess.

Car crash kills one injures three = Bad news,,, but not to the local funeral director, the local hospital, the local car dealer, etc.

Sorry, that was a gruesom thought wasn't it?

Gruesome?...that is being very charitable and not the word I'd use. "Appalling" does come to mind though.
But I guess like anything else it DOES come down to your point of view.:facepalm:

Re: news broadcasts...doom and gloom

I may have posted this before, but what the heck.

God made the world in six days flat,
On the seventh, He said, "I'll rest,"
So He let the thing into orbit swing,
To give it a dry-run test.

A billion years went by, then He
Took a look at the whirling blob;
His spirits fell, as He shrugged, "Ah well,
It was only a six-day job."
