NGK vs Champion plugs/ hard to start fixed

I was having trouble starting and idling, on my 1996 150 rude. It would even shut off occasionally idling around the dock. I would have to crank 3 to 5 times sometimes with each crank ending in a poof, before it would start back up. I had some slightly used champion plugs, I am not sure of the age of the plugs but they appeared to be pretty new, the electrodes all looked almost new with only some very slight discoloration. I replaced them today with some NKG plugs and wow what a difference, starts instantly every time, idles perfectly smooth, with none of the occasional hiccuping that could even make it shut off.
A friend of mine told me to try them and what a huge difference, I have been working on this motor since I purchased it a couple of months ago and it has never cranked and idled like it does now. So if you are have a hard to start motor or poor idle speed performance, and you have tried everything else try a set of NKG plugs. I got them from an Orielly auto parts store for way less than I saw on the web, under $6 each.

They (NGK) are not the recommended plugs as far as I know.
Did you have the correct champion plugs in place to begin with ???
There are many folk out here that swear by champion....I am one of them.

yes I did double check the Champion plugs for the correct numbers. I got a friend who swears by NGK plugs and if what I saw today is any indication, he has got me sold. I could not believe the difference.

the NGK web site has a chart to find the correct plugs for any outboard. I will post some pics of the champion plugs in a few

I would be that your plugs were just fouled to start with, so changing them made the difference. But I am a person that will only run NGKs in all of my engines(motorcycle, boats, truck). I have seen champions melt in a motorcycle head. NGKs are good quality plugs and I can get them anywhere. Although the pre-gaping is usually off.

Be very careful. The OMC carb'd motors are designed to run Champions just like Merc and Yamahas are designed to run NGKs. Some OMC motors are more tolerant of NGKs, that motor is not. You can safely run NGKs in an OMC but to do so usually requires rejetting.

Set up also plays a big part when deviating from the recommended specs.

rejetting, wow, I never figured it would be that big of difference. What makes them so different?? What should I do?? should I just go try to find some new champions?? I had no idea it could hurt my motor.

Which Champions were you running before? What octane fuel do you use? How old is the fuel?

my evinrude calls for champion. my truck calls for motorcraft. thats what they get. thats what they want you to use under warranty to save thier behind. if you use anything diferent it voids warranty. so think about it

All good choices but I'm not a big fan of the long reach plug in that motor. I run the QL77JC4 in my 60* V6s. A shade cooler plug, just something I prefer with the fuel we get these days.

If the carbs are clean and the ignition in in proper working order that motor should start almost instantly and run great. One of, if not the best engine designs OMC came up with.

Re: NGK vs Champion plugs/ hard to start fixed

well there is no warranty on this motor. I have used non-OEM parts on most of the trucks and cars and boats that I have owned. I have found that many aftermarket parts work as well or better than OEM and usually cost much less. I really depend on mechanics who know their stuff, experience is the best teacher. I have found mechanics that know more about the engines than the manufacturer ever dreamed of. So OEM really means nothing to me, I lost faith in manufacturers a long time ago..doctors too by the way. LOL
