Its getting dark pretty early these days and its getting hard to stake out some daylight and get out fishing. I have zero experience night fishing, but I can't seem to think of any reason why it wouldn't be some fun. Does anyone have any experience night fishing off of southern California? I'd like to stay within 2-3 miles of shore just because I am in a small 20' boat and I'd rather be close to the reefs that I know. Any techniques/ advice would be helpfull... Thanks in advance!

Re: Night fishing

Make sure your boat is equiped with all the safety gear. Epirb, flares, vest, hand held VHF, ect.

Do you have radar?

It's important to know whats around you, like another boat or bouy or anything like that. Alot of guys fish at night with out radar but I want to know whats around me or if someone is approaching me. Also if the seas kick up or if it get foggy the radar can sure help.I am on the east coast of central florida and its not that uncommon to run across a shipping container that is floating in the water. If you hit one of those the Coast Guard will have to come get you. When running at night just remember to take your time, if you get in a hurry your chances of hitting something or getting hurt will increase.

Fishing can be real good at night especially with a bright moon.

Re: Night fishing

I have fished a lot at night, but only in the bays. I have clear routes to my fishing spots marked on my GPS which I follow. Have someone with a spotlight constantly sweep ahead of you, looking for unlighted boats (seen those before) and objects in the water. Be careful and take your time. Make sure you have a white light on while anchored and keep an eye out for other boaters. We bottom fish at night a lot, mostly in the fall through spring. Lots of fun and very relaxing. Nothing like dozing off and then waking up to the wizzing sound of line peeling of the reel :D !

Re: Night fishing

i don't have any personal experience to offer, but I've heard that the running lights on boats in your path can blend in with lights on the horizon, effectively making them invisible. Something to watch out for when returning to shore.

Re: Night fishing

Thanks for the responses. I definitely have all of the coast guard gear, running lights etc. The deck itself isn't that well lit (3 battery operated led area lights and two hard wired spreaders), but I think that I might wire up a pair of Hella spots that I took off of my old truck before I sold it. I have a pretty decent gps system and an epirb, but unfortunately, I don't have radar.
The harbor has been pretty busy lately with squid boats, but the thing that I would worry about hitting the most would be a lobster pot buoy. It should be OK though, I plan on keep my speed down.
I've heard of guys using floating lights that you actually chuck in the water to fish around. Anyone know whether those are actually worth the money? Also, I picked up some glow in the dark squid lures and I figured that it was worth a shot to chuck them in the water and see what comes up.... Does anyone have any experience with tackle that works well in the dark? Thanks!

Re: Night fishing

Well, I had a chance to get out and give this a shot on saturday night. The deck of the boat was lit up well enough, but it was difficult to navigate through coastal kelp and buoys confidetly because our forward spotlight was not nearly as bright as it needed to be. Granted, it probably didn't help that there was very little moonlight and the swells were coming in pretty big. I tried hitting some of the spots that I go to during the day, but didn't really have any luck. The only fish that we caught all night was a bait fish that saw the light and decided to jump right over the rails and onto the deck.... Hopefully we have better luck next time!

Re: Night fishing

I have fished a number of open party sport boats out of Long Beach and Dana Point over the years..Mostly during the summer..I know it"s a lot different on your own boat..It seemed like the bite actually slowed down when it got dark except for mackrell swimming around the lights..Might try to get some live squid if possible....Good luck and let us know..

Re: Night fishing

I have a light setup I use when I go fishing at night. I bring one of my deep cell batteries from my bass boat along with a power converter. I have a quick set up with a 2 1/2 foot flourescent light that will last more than a whole night on a full charge. I also have an extention cord with a bug light (yellow bulb) just in case the bugs are bad. It sure beats using a flashlight and it also ensures other boaters see you. I carry an extra light and converter as a spare. Just make sure you know your way back in the dark! I have got lost before. At night the whole shoreline looks the same. I ended up in shallow water and had trouble finding my way back out. Daytime, I normally stay inline with a certain water tank. Nighttime I couldn't tell where the tank was!

Re: Night fishing

I assume you are fishing close to Santa Barbara?
As winter approaches, there is less of a night bite than any other time..

Personally I would only run out in the blackness to be on a spot at first light.Get the Calicos and White Sea Bass!

Every tuna/rock cod/grouper trip I went out on we travelled at night and fished hard all day...lol

I miss SC...

Re: Night fishing

CheapboatKev: Yeah, I left the Santa Barbara harbor with plans to either go to 3 mile bank or Carp reef, but when I saw how crappy the visibility was and how much the swell had picked up, I decided to take a smaller bite and head north to Mesa Lane. Hopefully with the long weekend coming up I will be able to get an early start and make it out to the islands.

Frazee1: Yeah I think that is probably a good idea to run a seperate battery for the extra lights.... I'm super paranoid about draining my two primary batteries, so I always keep a 3rd backup in the center console. I probably should have gone ahead and wired up those spots from my truck. With the linear flourescents, how do keep them sealed?

NO WHINERS: I was actually suprised that we didn't catch any live squid while we were out there... I ended up trying a glow-in-the-dark hoochie rig for a little bit with no luck. I also tried some of those scent enhanced plastic squids for the first time... The challenge with buying live bait is that the docks are only open from 6-12am. I guess next time I'll have to catch my own!

Thanks for the input everybody... I wish I had some pictures of monster fish I caught to post in return! Maybe next time!

Re: Night fishing

For lighting I built a 7 foot pole with a hanger on it that I put in one of the center console's pole holders. I then hang a battery operated Coleman lantern that puts out plenty of light for the boat but, being flourescent lighting, doesn't totally kill my night vision.

Re: Night fishing

I use a 1000 watt light on a 10 ft pole and small generator. Fish come to top of water. You can see them swimming around in the water. Its awesome... Always remember safety when you have fuel generator and electrical lights. Recommend generator in front of boat and lights in the back.

Re: Night fishing

Luminous Bait is necessary for night fishing and may be purchased through a Fishermen Guild Member. Luminous Bait can only be used at night. When fishing at night and using Luminous Bait, high quality (high-grade) fish will be tempted to bite.Depending on its type, a high-grade fish may reward you with various ?Fish Scale? drops. If you collect enough ?Fish Scale? of the same type, you may bring them to a Fishermen Guild Member for additional rewards.A high-grade fish can use deceptive skills unlike ordinary fish. When a high-grade fish uses its deceptive skills, reeling and pumping must be used in the opposite way in order to reduce the fish?s HP.

Re: Night fishing

I love night fishing we just go from dock loight to dock light fishing for big snook. Nowadays alot of people around here use submersable docklights and its like your not even fishing, just catching all night.

Re: Night fishing

Pardon the rant, this is a great idea, night fishing,
Abridged addition;
My impressions, lighted slip, night dive, theft, Tree-at-sea, bon fire fishing, the wife, the coast guard, a 19 year old with a M-16? and some stupid people, here goes,

The longer version;

Lights on the bottom of the slip, what a concept, jig a little bait, toss em in the live well, drink another beer all from the slip, go to sleep, wake up, ready, great idea.

Night diving is so different from day diving, no ideas what to target other than octopus and squid, though squid tastes great, they pay as much as $600.00 per ton at the dock, IIRC. Why not buy it from the boats? DFG rules! no dock sales! That sucks! No bait!

That's right, that's the only thing we use for bait when fishing white sea bass (or salmon), seen some 75-100 lbs bass in the last 2 weeks. Very fickle fish, bring your luck. When the bite is ON, it won't be long before it's OFF, ya gotta be there, what a b***h, the buoy that we left with the anchor was missing this morning, glad I wasn't there to see the tirade of radio chatter and cell calls:eek:

Good luck night fishing, my history, "night fishing, more beers than fish, do it from a safe place like the beach.....with a fire...yup were fishing, what do you mean you need to see some licenses?" that's night fishing.

As far as going fast on the water, in the dark, the last time we had a big storm (maybe 2 weeks ago) we reported a "tree" floating vertically, bobbing just under the surface for 20-30 seconds at a time and surfacing for the same time but sticking out of the water over 12 feet straight up. It was around 3 feet across. Such a nasty hazard, we stopped and got a GPS lock and called it in, that was the most nervous I've been in some years, that thing would run you through and in was underwater for 20-30 seconds. Unnerving at best, scary at worst, It got close 1 time because the wind and the currant are different, popped up too close, we freaked, put the 200 ponies to work and hi-tailed it out of there.

I will not go fast on the water here if it's dark, not worth it!

Build a fire, bring rum, a pole, tackle and a license.
have a safe time instead of limping home....hoping the radar will hold out and the GPS will work as well...that aint fun....

Sorry, I'm kinda old, learned some things, been here and there.
If you go night fishing, make sure the wife enjoys herself and you will do it again. If not, come home with fish on your breath.

Night fishing, ya, right, cool.

Sitting duck for the CG too, though we have nothing to hide, they want to help, ya know while were here, flairs, horn, ya know, a 19 year old with a M-16?, just wanted to see to your safety,

Be safe, rant over, sorry, bad day, stupid people,

Eeeeeesssssccccccuuuuuussssmmmmmeeeeeeeee........:D

LCjeff

I live salt water, it ain't all that...bad...

If I'm over the top,... oh well,...... abrasive? let me know, I'll stop.

Edit tomorrow,... thanks for whatever....ya know....night......

Re: Night fishing

yeah its definitely pretty intense to go out at night. I did it a few times since I first started this thread and haven't caught anything great. I would never do it in rough seas or at high speeds, but there is something peaceful about being the only one out there....
