Paul or Elvin,

I recently replaced the impeller on my NS8B which went fine(so I thought), but upon reassembly I could not get the cam that is attached to the shift linkage to engage back into the gear case. It's hitting something...

Now, I think where I messed up in this whole process was I didn't remove the pins from the coupler that connects the rod together and I pulled the whole linkage with cam still attached out *oops*.

Is there any way w/o having to pull the whole lower-end gears/drive out to put that cam and linkage back together or am I screwed??

I hope this all makes sense but if it doesn't have pics of what I'm referring to.

-Isaac

PS I did take the time to read through a bunch of post using the search option but I just couldn't find exactly my problem, but problems really close...

Isaac,

Yes, you're right... you should have uncoupled the shift rod. Did you disassemble the cam rod bushing, or did everything get pulled out by brute force? If the former, at least you haven't mangled any parts.

The clutch cam operates the clutch push rod, which drives the shift dog back and forth. See Elvin's parts catalog at http://www.internetoutboards.com/Pa...Catalog NS8B-9.8B (2003) - (002N21030-5).pdf

Odds are you will need to pull the prop housing out in order to get the cam to fit back into the area ahead of that push rod. Although... with a very long and narrow screwdriver, you might... might... be able to retract the push rod enough to get the cam to drop into place. Of course, that might take 3 or more hands. As long as the prop housing isn't too corroded, I'd just remove the 2 bolts, and extract the prop housing, complete with prop shaft, gears, push rod, etc. Just be careful not to drop that push rod. They seem to disappear on even the cleanest floors.

Thanks for the help!

I was able to install the LU back into place. I removed the linkage at the coupler and got lucky when installing the cam back into place.

Now I just need to figure out how to get these darn fill/drain plugs out from the gear housing so I can refill with oil...

Re: Nissan NS8B shift linkage help please

Two most common problems/pitfalls associated with the drain/fill plugs in the LU's:
1. Use a large-bladed screwdriver, with the tip in perfect condition. The largest one that will fit the head of the screw. Too small a tool will mangle the head of the screws.
2. Don't over-tighten the screws when installing. They don't require lots of foot pounds to seat. If you overtighten them, they will be a bear to get out next time. This is especially true with the newer, fine-thread plugs in the (Japanese) LU's such as Tohatsu, Nissan, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc.
