Re: NKG spark plugs for johnson 88?

I apologize to all for my comment. Everyone here has always been very helpful and I was just having a bad morning. Going to go with the Champions.

Good plan on the Champions and while i'm not directly involved in the comment toward DHadley i'm sure everyone on here including me appreciates the apology. DHadley is a whip when it comes to these motors, I think he was just trying to point out that running the wrong plugs by trying to save a few dollars may cost you big dollars in the end. It hits me funny when people say these Champion ql's are hard to come buy, I drive 2 minutes from my house to the local Canadian Tire and I can pull 20 packs off the rack.

No apology necessary. All I wanted to do is generate a thinking process and it seemed to work. That means you/we are thinking which will lead to good decisions. That's a good thing.

Yes, we've run all kinds of tests with all kinds of outboards and can confirm there is definately a difference in combustion temps (not the same as water temp) when running different brands of plugs. Fortunately a crossflow (typically) runs a bit on the rich side and is a bit more forgiving towards a hotter plug.

NGK plugs and some others tend to run a bit hotter than the "equilivent" Champion. We do run NGKs in some of the race motors but we dump a lot of fuel to make the power. That's why we say you can run a different plug than what the OEM calls for but you may have to do some rejetting on a stock recreational motor at recreational rpms. Personally I'd stay with the Champion plug the OE calls for.

I have checked Advance Auto, Auto Zone, and Napa(the big three here in Wilmington,NC) the first tow want to sell an Autolite as they cross it over to that. They can "order" the Champion. Napa website says they carry Champion, but I have to check for store availability. So they claim to carry but check store. Ok? Have not checked local Car Quest, closed Sunday I think. Can always go back to West Marine. I THINK they have the Champion. I know they stock the NGK's:rolleyes: They actually have at least four times the NGK's to select from as Champion. I'll find the Champs

Uuummmm -- you would be ignoring a wealth of information sir. He knows of what he speaks. Even my local farm store carries these plugs. NAPA would likely order them for you and if you are in a reasonable sized city you can order them at the store and pick them up at their warehouse which is likely in the same city. Champion plugs were chosen for that engine because that's what the engine was tuned to run with. Any cross reference chart, especially one dealing with combustion chamber temps are not likely to be 100% identical. Switch if you like, but be advised it is essential that you sneak up on these new "cheaper" plugs and by that I mean read them often and do not run wide open until you have made some slower runs. If the plugs read normal, then hammer down but keep the shops phone number in your wallet just in case.

You must have only read the first few posts. We all have made up and I have decided to use the Champions. Furthermore, I have found the Champions without ordering them and they already reside in the motor. thanks anyway.

I was just at Auto Zone last week and I purchased the Champion plugs there, the item number for that item is 031723 / 828-1 =QL77JC4. I paid $1.99 each for the Marine Spark plugs.
