no forward or reverse

i have a 70 hp force mercury and was in 32 feet of water and i slowed the boat to fish but when i went to move a little the boat would not engage forward or reverse both cables are hooked up and the boat was running fine,when i engage the throttle in forward i can still spin the prop although it seems to get a little tighter when engaged than in neutral. any ideas??steve

when the engine is off i can here it alittle but i can also spin the prop when in rev or forward by hand.is that normal to beable to spin prop when in forward

Hi,have had someone work the throttle while you looked at the shift rod to make sure it's moving,making sure your shift cable isn't broken?

Is the gear shift engaging and the boat not going or is the gear shift not moving. (throttle wouldn't move in this case)
