Good afternoon all. New guy here and new to these boats (but not motors and fixing stuff)

2000 Monterey 198LS with Volvo penta 5.0 GL-C (3869181), Holley 80320-2. We picked up recently from a guy who looks to have maintained it/recent refresh. New fuel lines, new cap/rotor/plugs and wires. Fuel filter appears newly replaced.
Took it right to the water just to see how it was. Fired right up, ran for about two minutes, sputtered and won’t restart. Doesn’t appear to be getting fuel. Previous owner said it used to sputter out after a few minutes of idle and he would let it sit for 30 then it would fire up again and be fine.
Gonna test everything and just want to make sure I am not missing anything -
-gonna bench test the fuel pump and make sure it is pumping (relay contacts were decent but ordered a new one just cuz)
-gonna pull and replace the fuel filter just cuz I need the piece of mind
- if that doesn’t work and no fuel getting through , Gonna pull the line and check the pick up and anti-siphon valve
-if all those check out, gonna see if she runs on starter spray and go after the carb.
(Is there a screen filter or anything on the line in at the carb?)

Anything else I need to check before or during?
Thanks for the first (of probably many) request of help -

You seem to be going about it the right way.

My only question is, are you positive it's not getting fuel or is that more of a hunch? Reason I ask is, a stuck choke could lead to similar symptoms (starts fine cold but dies warm). Especially right at about the 2 minute mark like you're seeing.

A clogged fuel tank vent hose could also be something to check out.

on a volvo, the electric fuel pump gets its power from the alternator

with any new to you boat, before putting the boat in the water and going, do all the maintenance the prior owner didnt do

pull the drive and do a bellows job, gimbal bearing inspections, u-joint inspection and check the alignment
change all the filters and fluids

in the fuel tank pickup is a screen
in the fuel tank pickup is the anti-siphon valve
between the anti-siphon valve and the fuel pump is the water-separating fuel filter
there may be a sintered filter in the fuel connection at the carb.
then there is the fuel vent line.

check for fuel pressure.
worst case, if you need to go thru the carb, you can usually do it on the 2300 with just the bowl and metering block gaskets.

If it was me, I would ditch the 2-barrel and the adapter and go to a 4-barrel.

^Yes to all of that ^
I am planning now on an all out inspection and going-over.

Interesting - hadn’t thought of the choke but I suppose… will rule out that and the vent hose for sure.
Will check over the entirety of the fuel system at this point.

I like the idea of a 4bbl. Might swap that if it ends up being that far up.

I sure do dig these forums. They have almost always been nothing but excellent advice and a great look at problems with real solutions.

Will update as I get time to get into it

So if I hook up the positive from the pump straight to a battery and keep the negative connected to the ground, I oughta get the pump to whirl?

Oh, whoopsie, scratch that ^
Sometimes you need to be smarter than the pump….

So pump is cranking, contents below the pump look clear and water free, screen at the carb is clear.
(Did notice the line from the pump to the carb is the original and got a nice well worn bend so that will be replaced)

So on to the carb instead
