Re: No kid, I dont drive trains...

so your a engineer :

technical interpretation rather than practical, unconcerned with aesthetics and ergonomics, consideration stops after the 'can we build it?' stage, lack of consultation with specifiers and user representatives, meets specification but doesn't work properly, inappropriate materials and absence of styling.

im a mechanic/E & I:

necessity is the mother of invention, very big tool-boxes, huge stocks of parts and ancillaries, materials, nuts, bolts and all other fixings known to man, happy to work all hours, especially evenings, weekends and public holidays at treble-time-and-a-half with days off in lieu, never consult with specifiers or customer specifications, enjoy quick-fixes, sticky-tape, mastic, bending bracketry, planks of wood and extended tea-breaks, never liaise with any other departments and think management are all useless idiots who can't even change a plug.

all we need now is a manager:

cost-conscious, process-led rather than output-aware, failure to understand and interpret real issues and implications, failure to ask questions, committee decisions produce impractical solutions, removed from reality, detached from customers and front-line staff, failure to consult with users and functional departments.

then we can really screw something up

when I surveyed, the engineers I used to deal with designed the structures drainage and utilities I would stake out, and asbuilt. the engineers I deal with now put oilfilters and batteries and light bulbs in the dumbest locations from a mechanics perspective

Yup, nice poster. . . I'm an Industrial Engineer - I thought that engineers drove the trains :noidea: . . . wound up in Information Technology.

I was at a bar, the guy next to me said he was a retired engineer,so I said" must have been a ***** shoveling coal all them years"!
He never even turned his head and looked at me. All he said was " bartender, give this man a beer so he shuts up!" Lol,
Everyone had a good laugh.....

the best engineers are the ones with actual field experience
its easy to weld a nose on a snowman on paper but try and do it in real life
and see what happens

I'm a general contractor and I swear, some of the engineers I've worked with couldn't assemble a bird house. I've finally found a couple that have actual experience in residential construction and it's night/day working with them. In the unlikely event "they" (whoever they are) put me in charge for a day, I'd require every engineer and architect to have field experience before licensing.

Littlerayray.... I actually think it'd be quite easy to weld a nose on a snow man.....it's like any welding...LOL....a shade tree mechanic (also mech. engr) would use a can of Co2 (keyboard cleaner) and some water as the filler.....just like TIG welding, but not a hot...LOL...sorry couldn't resist.....

My old instructor said you aren't an engineer until you design something that can't be cast, forged, machined or fabricated from any known process.
We designers get accused of that pretty much daily :D

Maybe engineers should remote oil filters in the trunk for easy access, make battery packs that just clip into place like rechargeable drills, and put all bulbs in one location and use fiber-optics to pipe the light to the right places...

Of course without engineers, you wouldn't be typing on the computer, tablet or phone you are using right now.

Not even going to start with construction contractors.

YOU guys! In automotive we referred to you as the guys in pink shoes and funny ties.
... you've obviously sat in a room full of "us." I'm one of 'em and can get annoyed ;)

try working or building the stuff you guys design its a pita now
i miss my dads old f100 with the straight six in her
you were able to crawl into the engine compartment and didnt have to be a contortionist to do any work and things were made simple and easy

that would be nice, but would settle for a battery or oil filter that you don't have to pull a tire and remove the inner fender to get to, light bulbs that can be changed without removing the front bumper cover to get to, or put a jack under the motor and removing the mount to change a belt. the battery in the trunk is ok, but realize some people carry everything and the kitchen sink back there for the tech to unpack before changing the battery then repack. some of the recalls i do i'm thinking who was the mental giant thought this would work in the first place:noidea:
