Re: No Love for the Merc 470
I figure since i called my self out on a different thread, ill throw my 2 cents in on this one.
There is a large amount of good things being said here. Most of the 470 bashers have their reasons, and honestly who cares. It really is not a good motor for anyone who does not know how to turn a wrench, or change their own oil. Let?s face it, that?s a fact. It needs maintenance. The benefit behind doing the maintenance is the power of the motor. All motors have good and bad, and the 470 is a dam powerful motor. The bad is that it?s not for a lazy owner. If you do not want to, or do not know how to do the maintenance, than these guys are right. People should stay away. If you want the power, (in a 4 cyl) than you better have a tool box. But maintaining them is not hard at all. Most of my background is not in the boating world, but it is the performance world, and I dare you to find a performance engine that doesn?t require maintenance. Their demise in boating is most likely due to a ?performance 4 cyl.? Who would have ever put those 2 phrases together? Mercruiser was smart enough to. But I don?t believe production boats were the place. By the way, the 3.7 is still being built, (but not for production) and many guys involved with racing are looking for the Mercruiser blocks.
At the end of the day the 3.7 it is just simply an awesome motor for the correct application. (I personally love the motor). But in the wrong application it is truly a piece of junk. To all of you who have that piece junk and are looking to unload it, drop me a line, I may be able to help you out.
