No more shear pins?

I used to have an old(1978) 10hp Honda and it had a shear pin at the propeller shaft. Anytime the propeller hit an obstacle, the pin would break and the propeller and shaft wouldn't get damaged. Now I have a new 20hp Honda and it has no shear pin. I doubt Honda engineers would design a system in which there's no "fuse" to save the essential parts. Does anyone know how this "no-shear-pin" system works? What is supposed to break when your propeller hits something?

Thanks!

The pins never worked that well as the HP went up

Breaking from a hit is just to close to the load the motor puts under normal operation

The Alu props fold over pretty easy :)

And the rubber hub can shear too.

Re: No more shear pins?

Had you been around in the early years, OMC had shear pins and Merc didn't. This was back in the early '50's. You'd think Honda would have learned something in 40+ years.

When fishing the rip rap on the windward side, where the fish are, not on the back side where it's calm, you would always hit somehting and the shear pin would shear and you were without power if you had an OMC. If you had a Merc, the rubber hub would slip and you would still have power and could get away safely.

You can put your shear pins where the sun doesn't shine. Left OMC and went to Merc for that very reason.

I understand whenever you have this rubber part it can slip during the hit and then regain friction, so you'll still have power, which can be crucial under some circumstances. But my propeller seemingly doesn't have a rubber hub. The blades are aluminum and the hub is brass or bronze. That's why I can't figure out what would break if I hit something. I hope it will be just a propeller blade and not a bent shaft. I broke a half-dozen of shear pins in the past, with my old Honda, and everytime it happened, I thought it was great I didn't have any important component broken.

I assume you're just being overly friendly and informal in your last paragraph, Mark. I refuse to believe you could ever offend me for no apparent reason.

Thanks again for all the replies!
