I bought a 89 capri OMC cobra and we can not get spark to the plugs, we dont have any spark coming out of the coil. On the coil there is 2 terminals, positive and negitive, and we have 12-14 volts on it, but get nothing comming out. Replaced ciol with new one and same thing, Any ideas,

this is above my pay grade but this site might have some readings you can take to trouble shoot your lack of fire. hopefully others will chime in.

hope it leads to a fix

Do you know if you still have points or has it been upgraded to electronic ignition? If it's still points you can quickly take a piece of light sandpaper or an emery board to the points to clean them and see if that gets you going. If it does then you need to replace the points, set them properly with a dwell meter and then check/adjust your timing.

Got the same problem. Same year '89 OMC Cobra i/o, no spark at plugs. Have 12V at coil. New battery. Replaced points, condenser, rotor, cap, still nothing. Someone said it could this possibly be the starter solenoid as I heard this provides the spark to the plugs until the coil kicks in? I never heard of this before. They said to hook a wire from the battery pos. to the coil pos. and start it this way. Is this right? Before I do this is there anything else I should check first? Are there some fuses that I do not know about? I looked under teh dash and checked the one by the battery, all good. By the way it is getting gas, squirting in real good.

Bet the points are old and glazed over. To check, run some fine sand paper over the points (both sides) and see if you have spark. If you do, put in new points. Actually, do a full tuneup.

Re: no spark on a 89 bayliner

what i do is i take a test lead (a peice of wire with aligator clips on both ends) and with the key on i attach 1 end to the coil negative and rapidly tap the other end against engine ground. If you have spark the problem is in the trigger, wether it be points or electronic, if you don't get spark then the coil or the coil wire is usually bad.
