Depends on how tight your muffs fit. If you hold them tight to the drive while someone watches the hose in the boat, you should be able to see water coming out the hose.

You rock bug man! I finally removed the entire pump and sure enough I had installed the new oring over the old. I started the boat on the muffs and the housing feels cool to the touch and water is now flowing from the prop hub.

I am going to take the boat out in a few minutes at lake hopatcong. I will keep everyone informed as to the results. Thanks again!

So good and bad news. The pump is definately working now. The raw water pump housing, hoses, manifold and riser are all cool to the touch. However, the temp got up to around 200 degrees before I shut it down. It seems like a thermostat issue but I just replaced the thermostat along with a new temp sender.

Any thoughts?

I thought it may be the seal that I did not replace in the drive but the temp did not come back down while not on plane coming back to the dock.

Did your alarm sound at all? I believe it will go on around 210 deg. Did you feel the hoses/riser, and if you did, did they feel "hot?"

The alarm was not triggered and the riser was cool

Ok, so when I suggested you remove all traces of the old O ring, that is what I meant :)
Right now let's remove the thermostat and boil it in a pan of water along with a thermometer and observe it opening and at what temperature. This will allow you to eliminate the T'stat or other wise. (Why did you feel the need to replace it anyway?) When you fitted it, was it secured by the O ring? Have you checked the temp of the T'stat housing with an Infrared temp gun to confirm the actual temp, might just be a temp sender or gauge that is out of calibration.
Have fun.

I replaced it for preventative maintainence but when I removed the old one I realized it was broken. One of the metal sides had let loose and the spring wanted to come out. I did secure it properly with a new oring. I will have to buy an IR gun to check temp of the housing. What temp should it be? It felt hot to the touch but not scalding. I also replaced the temp sender because the old one stopped working.

I am going to head out to home depot in a few to buy a IR gun. If it is not the thermostat what else should I look at?

Re: No water flow to raw water pump

So I ran the boat on the muffs after buying an IR gun. These are the readings after warm up:

Gauge - just under 200 while running
Just over 200 after shut down

Thermostat housing- 96 while running
130 after shut down

I also removed the housing and tested the thermostat. The thermostat seems to be opening at around 160 to 170. While the housing was off I took a reading indies the motor at 140.

Does all this point to a bad temp sender or gauge?

I just ran the boat on the muffs with the thermostat out and the gauge wouldn't even move. The housing read no more than 60 with the gun.

i am not sure where to go from here so I think I am going to test the temp sender in boiling water with the gauge connected.

Re: No water flow to raw water pump

It seems like most are done with this thread but I just wanted to update on the off chance that it could help someone in the future. I tested my sender in boiling water with and without the gauge. The results in my opinion point to a faulty temp sender. I will include a picture of my handwritten notes. Please excuse my chicken scratch.

I thought it was odd that a brand new sender could be so off so I looked up my part number and sure enough I ordered the wrong sender. On the volvo parts diagram they list two senders. One for dual station and one for my application. I accidentally ordered the dual station version. Look at part number 17 on the following diagram.

Electrical System 3.0GSP-A, 3.0GSM-A - 7744380 - Volvo Penta

I am going to order the correct temp sensor. I will keep everyone informed as to the results.

Sounds to me as if you are on the right track, learning along the way all this useful knowledge. Now get out on the water and enjoy your boat.

Ha thanks pcdiver, I am definately learning and can't wait to get back on the water. I will report back after I install a new temp sensor. Take care
