Noise Coming From Outdrive.

I really don't know how I could explain it.. But it sounds like a thunk it isn't very loud but it raises concern ... I don't know what to check to see if its repairable..

I don't think your giving enough information on your post.. Like, when it thunks, how long, and in gear or out, when motor is running, or just spinning the prop by hand. Does it sound like it's in the upper, or lower, and what is it on, year, size and make.

what year OMC outdrive? if its happening sporadically you could be having the same problem i just encountered...i had a clunk every once in a while,got worse and worse...i sent it to waterworld in durham nc...the young guy said it was the rubber in my prop,my prop was nicked up so i bought a complete prop. when i picked the boat up i spoke with the owner(about 60yrs old ) and he was inquiring bout my satisfaction with waterworld and the nature of my problem...i explained,he chuckled a little. he looked at my old prop and said yes you definitely needed a new prop,BUT that wont cure the problem. im now seeing $$$$$....and more $$$$$ lol, my boat is a 86 sunbird with the omc cobra outdrive,apparently there was a recall on these outdrives because of the degree of pitch on the clutch and gears,supposedly they come stock with a 2.5deg pitch and it wasnt enough,so they went to a 5deg pitch.

if you look closely it appears this problem happened before on the fwd/rev gears because it looks like they switched f/r so they wouldnt have to buy new gears/clutch

My appologies... It thunks when the boat is running, in gear and out of gear... Goes faster when in gear... From what im hearing it sounds like an upper... It is on 1993 chevy 4.3h.o...

How much is it to get that conversion kit to make it an Alpha 1 outdrive???? Am I able to use my same outdrive with it or do I have to buy a Alpha 1 drive... I can probably get ahold of a used one..

How much is it to get that conversion kit to make it an Alpha 1 outdrive???? Am I able to use my same outdrive with it or do I have to buy a Alpha 1 drive... I can probably get ahold of a used one..

your video is set to private -so we cannot view
it's about $2500 to do the conversion - doesn't work for a used drive - SEI modifies a new drive to work when you order the kit.

sounds like the gimbal bearing and/or u-joints (just on my cheesy laptop speakers though)

has gimbal bearing been greased lately? You want to pull the outdrive and check the bearing and the U joints. and see if there's any water in the driveshaft bellows

Honestly i don't know if it has been checked... I just bought the boat and trying to get it up to par.. Hopefully that's all it is..

I 2nd the gimbal or u-joints. A stethoscope would help determine where the sound is coming from. I would start by pulling the drive like said above and checking things out. Have you lubed the gimbal bearing from the external grease zyrt yet? Would be a good idea to change the gear oil too of you just bought the boat.

Yeah i just bought new gear oil... Going to put it in tomorrow.. Should i wait until I replace the gimbal??? How hard is it to replace the gimbal bearing?? And how about the u joints??? I have never done it before but am very mechanically inclined...

I would get yourself a repair manual for your engine and outdrive.....it will outline the procedure. The drive shaft/ujoints and gimbal bearing are not the big of a deal to change. I would also change the impeller in the drive while your at it.

I have never changed them out, but they are very easy to get to. You can replace the oil now or after, as it won't need to be drained to replace or inspect these parts.

Make sure you fill the drive properly. Its not filled from the bottom but from the middle hole.

Replace the gaskets/o-rings on all three plugs.

Thanks just ordered gimbal bearing, u joints, and impeller... Hopefully that's what my problem is...
