In the house next door live a retired couple who have allowed their daughter with kids and her husband to move in with them. The son in law for over a year has taken up the hobby of trying to play an electric guitar. Almost every day he goes out into the small garage behind their house and turns the amp up and plucks and plucks loud off key notes FOR HOURS.. This summer I could seldom even sit on my back patio and talk without having this loud noise interfering with my ability to converse. Often even when I am inside of my house I hear this note plucking even while watching tv. This am was the final straw, I woke up and the first thing I heard was loud note plucking. I then called my retired neighbor and asked him to see if he could get the SIL to turn it down, He said he would go and ASK him if he would. I then told him I wasnt trying to be a jerk that I knew during the day there were not laws to keep people from making noise BUT after asking him to turn it down if he did not it would be opening the door to a "see who can make the most noise contest" and that with no doubt I would win but did not want to go down that road.... I will soon find out if he will turn it down. any ideas would help. thanks

I'm not sure what would be the correct solution in your situation, but I feel your pain...

We once had a group of loud "rental" neighbors who would have their music blaring, pool balls knocking together and basket balls bouncing all hours of the night. A couple of my neighbors and I tried to handle it respectfully, but it didn't work. So what does a fisherman do.... I filled a 5 gallon bucket with anchovies and fish guts, topped it off with water, then set it at the corner of my fence, right next to their front door. In the middle of summer it didn't take long for the bucket to ripen and every time they opened the front door, "the odor" wafted into their house. Thankfully, they couldn't handle the stench any longer and quieted down,,, my wife was hot on my butt to dump the bucket as it was getting pretty gnarly smellin'

Next time he's making a racket just call the law and have them nicely drop by your noisy neighbor for a visit to explain there have been complaints by neighbors about noise. Most folks will get the message when they see the law show up.;) Good Luck!

Buy the SIL a nice set of headphones for Christmas. Most amps have a jack for them. Be a little less than joking, but nice, about it and see what happens. It costs you a little cash, but perhaps when he hits rock star status you can collect back :D

How old is the husband? I played my E guitar occasionally on the deck in the afternoon, sometimes alittle loud, 25 watt amp, but I was a "star" lol, and I was 13! I did'nt dare play loudly until I learned to play well. I would be embarassed to have anyone hear me sound like crap let alone loudly. He must be a moron. I lost interest in electric and got a good acoustic guitar. I can play as loud as I want and not bother anyone, except when I try to sing also:D I second the headphones, he can make his own ears bleed in privacy!

Had a renting neighbor when I live in the ghetto in Ft. Lauderdale. They played loud Carribean music late night and early mornings.

I had a 100 watt audio system at the time, so I would put on a cd of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and crank it up to window rattling level for an hour or so every time they exceeded neighborly levels.

The language barrier was thus breached.

If the guy has been doing this often for over a year and has not gotten any better at playing, he should find another hobby or get some lessons. Some people have a natural ability for all kinds of different arts, and musical instruments. And some do not, even w lessons. I find it hard to believe the parents could put up w this either! Are they hard of hearing?

Bubba, I don't think there is a good time to pluck bad, loud, electric guitar. It sounds the same turned down to a reasonable level anyway just quieter, volume knob on amp and guitar. Plucking is easyer with Banjos and other accoustic stringed instruments anyway. Electric guitar strings are softer and tighter to the neck and plucking it wrong or too hard makes it buzz, pop and other awfull sounds. He sounds like he really needs some basic lessons like tuneing the guitar, and maybe learn to play chords well or strum before "plucking";.... or he could just have a bad case of fatfinger:D

Re: noisy note plucker next door

Question, you say he plays it durin the day during fairly normal hours. Exactlly when would you like him to play?
I dont care WHEN he makes noise with the thing as long as I cant hear it while I am INSIDE of my house. Its just not necessary to have it turned up that loud. No reason at all I should be forced to hear this crap all the time. He is the one with a baby that sleeps more than I do and if he wants his baby to rest in peace I BETTER BE ABLE TO.....I can make much louder noise than he can I just dont want to go down that road.

Learn an instrument yourself, and practice out in the yard.

Here's a good one...

Support his playing by buying him some guitar books. Maybe he'll get better sooner making his picking more tolerable. :). Pick you favorite band...

Re: noisy note plucker next door

I dont need to learn an instrument cause I played drums for over 15 years on a regular basis. Only reason I dont have a set now is because I RESPECT my neighbors. I do have a strong power amp with 6 speakers I could aim in his direction but I dont want to have to......I told his father in law yesterday and maybe that will end it. As far as talent goes this clown might in several years be able to play "mary had a little lamb" at some childs birthday party,,, believe me it is hopeless.

Re: noisy note plucker next door

in my youth a neighborhood girl would practice being a Marching Band Majorette marching around her backyard bowing a whistle--got old real quick. Having the 100 watts per channel stereo & speakers set facing her house we played the entire 1st Black Sabbath vinyl album cranked all the way up- and never heard another peep.

Some very good ideas here. The boat is covered for the winter and on the far side of the property but that 2 cycle does make some sweet noise..The plucker has it so loud making a counter noise while hes a jamin would go unheard by him... better to wait for him to go in and then give him some background music. I like Wilson Picket turned up and the 80 watt per channel car stereo I salvaged from a car is hooked up and ready to blast out "broadway". The part about the young girl marching around blowing a whistle is funny as he11

Too bad I'm not in the live music production business any more. It would be fun to lend you some concert cabs and subs, plus about 30,000 watts worth of power amps. Then you could wait for him to start, so that you could return fire. With a little something that is heavy on the bass frequencies, I'm sure you could move the neighbor's garage about a block down the street in no time! :D
