Not enough water coming out when muffs on

I've got a mercruiser 350/330 that I just got a week ago and I've been going through it making sure it is seaworthy and in doing that I've found the alternator was frozen so I replaced it with a better 3-wire 12-SI instead of a 10-SI 1 wire. Of coarse seeing how the alt. was frozen nothing on that belt was spinning either which is the water pump.

I have also noticed that not alot of water comes out of the outdrive when I've got the muffs on it, it mainly just sprays from around the muffs. I took off the hose of what seems to be a cooler for something and hooked the hose directly to it and forced water through it and it did fine. What should I be looking for as the problem?
Thanks

raw water or fresh water? Where is the hose that you took off? Is this an alpha drive?

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

That would be the power steering cooler I believe.....Does it have a hose that goes to the p.s. pump? If you are not getting water there I would look for a blockage in that cooler. Put the muffs on and start the engine and see what kind of flow you have with the hose still disconnected. If there is little or none it is time for a new impeller.Don't run it more than 20-30 seconds or you will fry the exhaust boots......JK

Surely he didn't hook water up to the power steering?

No, but the cooler is there. The hose goes from the transom to the cooler then to the t-stat housing on rwc models......The p.s. cooler works just like the heat exchanger does....JK

I thought it was a power steering cooler but that seemed uneccesary to me, Guess not.

No I didn't hook it into the P/S pump.

It is raw water.

Here's what I did, there are 4 hoses going into the cooler two little, two big. I took the hose off that comes from the outdrive and blew air thru it to make sure it went where I thought it went(water intake), then took the hose that goes to the water pump off, put the hose in it and clamped it, I cut the water on and it cycled through fine.

I'll have to check and see what kind of drive it is.

I'm thinking it has been run on the water while there wasn't being any water circulated because the exhaust boots were fried when we got it but luckily the rest of the engine doesn't have any problems

Is the power steering really neccessary?

Are you calling the engine water pump the impeller or is it something else?
If not what is involved in changing the impeller and where is it?

I need to get a shop manual for all of this but I haven't found one yet.

Have you tried driving a car that has p.s. and it is broken......that is what it would be like if you disconnected the p.s.

On a raw water(sea water) cooled boat, the incoming water is drawn in through the drive, where you are supposed to put the muffs on. Inside of the drive is the impellar that pumps the water up to the motor. The water pump is not the same as the impellar.

and yes, you definately need a manuel.

The "water pump" on a car is called a circulator pump on a marine engine. An impeller is in the outdrive and is the main source of water to cool the engine. They need to be replaced every year or two and cant ever be run dry even for a moment or two.You will need a manual for this.Charlie

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

You probably have an Alpha One. My First boat was a Scorpion 210, and I loved that boat. Is it the one with big round back seat? Anyway, you need Mercruier manual #6 for the drive & #9 for the engine, don't waste your time or money on a Seloc or Clymers.... Is this a 350 c.i. Small Block Chevy or a 454 BBC? Changing the impeller in your out-drive is where I would start.....Use the 'search' function to find out how to do it. "Changing Impeller". Or Google "Mercstuff. comhowdoi? It will be very helpful until you get the manuals. Changing the impeller is easy, if you have any mechanical aptitude at all......JK

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

So more as no, it won't be a problem running it without a P/S pump(look at my avatar that's my car)

Ok, looks like I'll be replacing the impeller

I went out and checked to see what the drive said on it and here's what I've got, Serial #5500120 , and it says power trim XD on it in a few places

Yes,it's got a round back seat, I can't wait to get this one out on the water but I already love it.

Where do I get a manual for it? It's a 330hp 350ci .

Where's a good place to get an impeller?

I do all my own work on all of our family cars and am about to rebuild my Buicks engine so I think I will be able to do it.

Thanks for all of ya'lls help

If it has a P.S. pump then you need it, and the cooler, too. It wouldn't have a cooler if there was no pump, if that makes sense.....I would contact Mercruiser directly by phone or e-mail to find out exactly what model engine and drive you have.....JK

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

You can get impellers online or at a factory authorized Merc.dealer, you can find the nearest one on their web-site. If you have the serial #,they should be able to tellyou what you have as well, But you need to find out what drive you have first....JK

not trying to be smart here, but if your engine isn't running, you won't get water thru the outdrive. i couldn't tell from your post if you had actually cranked the motor with the muffs attached. if not running, the water will spray everywhere from around the muffs.

Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

Are you saying that I need power steering on the boat? The reason I said look at my car is because it hasn't had power steering.

I'll check with Mercury in a minute

It was running when I did it.

I'll still check with Mercury but I went to that mercstuff site and the serial # showed up as a model 470 drive.

I called Mercruiser and the guy said it was a MC-1 drive, so now I'm trying to find the book for it

I believe the MC-1 is an older version of the alpha.
