Re: Not enough water coming out when muffs on

Are there any tricks for separating the upper and lower housing? I took all of the bolts out but it still won't come off. The only reason I can think of is the bolt that holds the anode on, it would not turn and I was afraid it would strip so I cut the anode off. After I cut it off the screw still wouldn't turn so I've got the drive turned over and the hole filled with penetrating oil. Anyone else had this problem?

I got the upper and lower housings separated.

I started to change out the impeller but found I I don't have the right one so I'm going to have to go and exchange it.

The old one was completly shot, Also one of the bolts was so corroded that I almost thought there wasn't one there at all

I'm about to go and take the shift shat assembly out so I can see what is leaking in it. Would I do better just getting all of the components instead of one or two? I'm pretty sure I wont need the actual shaft because it is the stainless kind.

Man, I hate to say it, but if there was water in the bellows, you really should replace both the gimbal bearing and the u-joints. If you don't they both will have a very short life.

Yeah, I went and looked at it and the bearing will definitely need to be replaced but luckily the u-joints are in good condition.

What does it generally cost to get the gimbal ring replaced? I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to have someone do it instead of buying the tools. Do you think a Merc place would loan out the tools?

I've also got the seals on the way for the shift shaft.

"Also you said I need manual #9 and #6, I've found both on eBay but I didn't see my engine year listed, I just wanted to make sure this was the right manual. It's a 1980 carbureted 350c.i. rated @330H.P." how did you figure out your 350 is rated at 330 HP ? just curios

There still isn't a 330HP 350 in Mercruiser. Not sure what model he has, but manual #9 is for 85 thru 88 V8 engines. Nothing for 80. That is all in manual #3.

In 1980,......
A 350cid SBChevy/Merc. was 260hp........
The 330hp was the 454cid Big Block Chevy........

Sounds like your boat has had a Transplant sometime in the last 25 Years...........

It doesn't matter what the make or model of the boat is, the only thing that matters is what the engine is. Like Bondo said, the 330 hp was a big block, not a 350. Mercruiser has never had a 330hp small block Chevy engine, especially in 80.

I checked the casting number on it and it is a 350. They didn't use the chevy 350 HO? Also it has a rather large Rochester 4-barrel on it for a 260 hp engine

If I'm not Mistaken(again),.......
There's Only 1 Size of Rottenchester 4bbl. Carb..........
In 1980,..... There was No 350 HO..........Just the 350cid/ 260hp...........
I Think the 305cid was the small SBC by then......

Your drive Should be the old Pre-Alpha,.......
I can't Imgine that 1 of those would last more than 1 or 2 Mistakes with a BBC in front of it,..........
The Alphas are Known to Grenade with the BBC motors..........

BTW,........... Those 330hp 350 Chevies you've been reading about,........
Those are Current GM/Chevy Crate motors,..... For Cars,.....
The Cams are Way Off for a Marine motor,..... It would be a Dog in a Boat........... ;)

Yeah, The 4GC, what I meant was it is too big for a 260HP engine.
Do you mean in marine application, because there has always been a HO 350

I'm just going with the stock equipped cars I'm used to, it just seems like 260hp is a waist out of a 350 especially with a 4-barrel. What range of cam duration or power band do marine engines like?

Idle to 5000rpms.............
The Torque has to come in Way Down Low........
It was a pre alpha, but was replaced with an Alpha

Sounds like a job for a nailhead.

Whenever this drive goes out it's getting a repower and a Bravo drive.

Yeah, I'm just used to cars. Chevy has except for in the beginning always had a HO.
