in the lower unit...the drive consists of an upper gear housing and the lower unit..the lower needs to be removed and reinstalled with the shift lever in forward gear...the pump sits at the base of the driveshaft

There are 2 "water" pumps on your setup. One in the outdrive, (impeller pump) and one on the engine (circulating pump). The impeller pump needs to be serviced (replaced) every year on your Alpha 1.

Desol, don't feel dumb asking. I have a question better than that, even after reading most of the other posts and a manual.... ( I think boat repair induced senility is creeping up on me )
Is the only reason most instructions indicate the whole outdrive has to come off the bell housing to change the impellor is clearance with the shaft? In other words.. if I can get the stern of my boat on a little hill, then I can simply remove the lower half of the outdrive and leave the upper attached??
I don't always have an assistant to help handle the weight and I am still unsure of how the shift mechanism reconnects. Probably once I actually do it, it will be clear.

If I was just going to replace the water pump assembly or service the lower case, I just pull the lower and leave the upper attached to the bellhousing.

The drive needs to be shifted into F gear via the shifter just the same as if you were taking the whole drive off. The link I posted shows where all the nuts are located and the process.
