I don't get this. My shift assist switch never worked and it turned out the switch was defective. I put a new one in but it still doesn't do anything.
When I look at the shift lever while operating the gear shift, the gear shift arm gets close to the top of the switch as you enter ahead but not closing it.
Also looking at it, there is no way it could close the switch just when shifting and only back to neutral. It could be mis-assembled or missing something for all I know.
The official book shows and says nothing about how this mechanism works.
Can anyone describe exactly whats supposed to happen? or have a picture?

Re: Oceanpro 200 shift switch

The switch only works when coming OUT of either gear. When the motor is running, there is a "load" on the clutch dog lugs and as the shift linkage is pulling the clutch dog, the switch is activated and the motor stumbles momentarily (you shouldn't feel it because it is so quick) and that "unloads" the clutch dog lugs and they disengage easily.

To illustrate, with the motor not running but in gear, have someone hold their foot against the prop blade and someone else slowly attempt to shift out of gear. You should see the plastic parts move slightly and depress the plunger in the switch.

Switch sets inside a housing just close enough to the shift linkage..When you ready to shift it will press on the switch causing momentarily interruption disabling one bank to lower Rpms so you can shift ?You still can shift with all banks firing but it will be harsh on your lower unit ?.

To find out if it is working correctly simply pull the switch and keep it in your hand , Start the Eng and press it and monitor the Eng Do that a couple time by press it and let it go ..If Rpms dropped and jumped back up that mean you got good working switch and it?s time to figure out the mounting housing position in correlation to the linkage ..Do you have a pic

Seahorse has it exactly right. Manually put a load on the prop (engine off) while in gear. As you shift out of gear into neutral, the switch rides up in that bracket, and electrically closes, causing the starboard bank to cut off momentarily.

The trick is in loading that prop like it is when pushing against that water while in gear.

Re: Oceanpro 200 shift switch

Thanks for the useful info. I had another look and see I am missing an item. It is called 'pin' ($31) and sits at the top of the switch. Someone must have lost it during some work back in the past.
So the top of the switch never contacts anything on the shift linkage and the switch never closes.

Re: Oceanpro 200 shift switch

Thanks for the explanation. NOW I get it!.
If you just wag the gear shift lever with no engine running and so no resistance from the clutch, you will see NOTHING happen to the switch. This fooled me completely. I assumed from watching this , that something was out of whack.

I see now that only when the clutch is really stiff, AND you are pulling out of ahead gear, the force on the gear linkage compresses the switch spring and it closes.. When the load comes off the switch will open again.

Its a pretty smart piece of mechanism.
