I was changing the oil in my new engine yes. It is the 10 hour oil change to change the thin break in oil.

The engine has only been in for about a week now. The filter was put on when we installed it about a week ago. I only put the filter on with my hands, no wrench.

Yes when I went to take it off I put a filter wrench on it (the good ones with the metal band not the crap rubber ones) and it wouldn't come off. It crushed bad.

I tried channel locks and all kinds of stuff before sticking a screwdriver through it and trying to turn it..... nothing

So now all that is left is the hard metal ring that the threads are located on. The part where when you look at a new filter you can see the threads.

Anyone have any ides on how to get it off?

Thanks

So the female portion of the threaded connection is left? Is this a remote oil filter or straight to the block? If it is remote, remove it and go from there. Sounds like you need to get some torque on it. Maybe a pipe wrench or basin wrench if you can get to it? Just don't put too much pressure on it and crush the male threads...

it's lefty loosey, righty tighty, but it's upside down, so are you sure your taking it off the right way?

Use a hammer and punch to spin off the remnants off the old filter.

Just one addition.....

When you install the new filter,
ONLY turn it 3/4 turn after the gasket contacts the filter base.

You DO NOT have to tighten it so tight that you cannot get it it off later!!!

Re: Oh man. HUGE mess with oil filter.

so the "top" is all that is left and its still threadded on to the block/remote location? Does it have the holes in the top (about 12 1/4" holes) if so you may be able to take a drift pin and use one of the holes and try to tap it off or loosen it that way. So use a drift pin or large nail set and use the edge of one of the holes and tap it so it is loosening the ring. Don't know if I'm explaining it well enough but I have never even heard of this happening.

Its the one straight on the block.

All that is left is the metal ring or band whatever you call it where the threads and little holes that surround the threads are.

As in, if your looking at a new filter, you can see the metal part where you can look into the filter. It has a hole with threads in it and then littler holes around the center threaded hole.

On the 5.7 350 does the thing that the oil filter goes onto come off or is it part of the block?

I am at a loss. I am thinking that if I can get a pair of needle nose vise grips into two of the little holes that surround the center threaded hole and get em really tight that I might could use a pair of channel locks to twist it off.

If you could show a picture of what's left, I'm sure you would get some good suggestions. I would think some sort of pin wrench to get it off using the holes in the piece left.

I have never heard of this happening. If you applied enough torque to rip the filter housing off, there is no way a pair of needle nose pliers is going to remove whats left. Something went terribly wrong on the install.

You did lube the rubber o-ring with oil?

The filter was not cross threaded?

No silicone or sealants were used or left on the mating surface?

Take the filter base on the block off by removing the 2 bolts and go from there...

No it wasnt cross threaded and I used some of the new oil to put on the ring when I put it on.

Thats what I was asking. Can the thing that the filter mounts to be taken off? Its a 5.7 350.

Yes. If you can get to them, the filter mount is held in by two bolts. Just remove the tin in the very top of the filter remains and you will see them...

Of course you can't get to the bolts with the remnants of filter still on there.

Re: Oh man. HUGE mess with oil filter.

The needle nose vise grip idea will not work. The torque you apply with the wrench will move the vise grip right off the holes in the face plate of the damaged filter.

I have a thought that you did turn the wrong way. As said before, the filter is upside down and you might have wrung this badboy off. The filter body will start to crush and cave in when you apply the filter wrench in this manner.

As you found out, the old mechanic technique of smashing a screwdriver thru the filter, does not work. Had a few stuck on filters in my day and that screwdriver method never worked for me. Just tore the filter housing and made a huge mess.

I expect this is how you got into this position really. But you can get that filters face plate off. If you have room. Use a small, sharp cold chisel and a small hammer. Use caution to only let the chisel bite on the filter's face plate. Tap the chisel to the LEFT and she will give. Don't try to do this in two seconds! Take your time, get in the best position possible and the face plate of the filter will give.

Good Luck,

Johnny

Yea I'm turning it the right way. Since it's upside down it gets turned clockwise.

Right???

Re: Oh man. HUGE mess with oil filter.

Just went through that with a 5.0 motor. Fortunately the filter is on top and easy to reach. Filter wrench just started to collapse it so I tried the screwdriver trick to no avail. I finally removed all of the filter piece by piece until only the base was left. I carefully used a cutting disk on a Dremel tool on the remainder making sure I didn't nick the screw fitting on the filter base or get any metal in the oil passages. It would not come off until it was nearly cut in half. There was nothing wrong with the threads so I don't know why it was so tight. I was blaming some ham-fisted mechanic at the boatyard, but maybe that wasn't fair. I didn't install the filter and know to always put it on hand tight, so I get so frustrated when things don't work out the way they're supposed to.

Re: Oh man. HUGE mess with oil filter.

Would you be able to grab it with one of those Channel Lock style oil filter wrenches? They have pretty agressive "teeth" that may get you a decent grip on the filter base.
For some reason the oil and gas filter for that matter, on my boat are particularly sticky, despite me following the install directions to the letter.
Always a clean plate to mount to, always lube the base, only tighten by hand.
Always stuck.

That's why I got that pliers style filter wrench- on an intact filter you grab low by the base, and it has enough grip not to slip, and being nearer the base the casing tends to rip less. The longer handle of the tool gives more leverage.

Re: Oh man. HUGE mess with oil filter.

Get someone to weld you up a bar with two round pegs that will mate with the holes in the oil filter base. Or you might be able to make one yourself with a bar and two bolts sticking through it. Use a new oil filter as your building jig.

Try the chisel first.
