Oh No! I forgot the oil!

Yesterday I put 2 gallons of gas into my pretty-empty tank and took my outboard (Merc 650) out for a shakedown run. It kept dying after a minute or two. The bulb would be soft, so as long as we squeezed it fuel kept flowing and the engine ran. We must have restarted the motor 6 or 7 times in the half hour we were on the water.

I posted this last night, and was given advice about checking hoses, etc. Then I remembered that I had not added oil to the gas. :(

Would the lack of oil have caused the problem of gas not flowing? Or was sucking air just God's way of saving my motor from my stupidity?

lack of oil would not cause that...try a new primer bulb but first-for a primer bulb to operate properly it has to be level if not elevated at the end closest to the motor for the check valves to work..check that then go for the bulb...then the fuel pump

A primer bulb can lay in any orientation once the engine is running and it does not stay firm once the engine is running. It does appear you have a fuel problem however and the God of Luck was looking over your shoulder. Run the engine on a different tank. If it still acts up you have a fuel pump or carb problem. If not, you have a tank/line problem.

First thing I'd do would be to get some oil into the engine. Deep Creep is a way of doing that. Pulling the plugs and spraying directly into the cylinders, and spraying into the carbs and pulling the engine over before you crank up. Then on a new tank with oil crank up.

Then on the old tank, add some oil (correct proportion) and some gas behind it to mix it up.
