First off, a 1964 Evinrude 18hp long shaft tiller with some issues. This has been a problem that has been ongoing for a little while. I was going to have it professionally fixed but I ran into some $$ issues. The shift lever has moved in towards the housing and I don't have any idea what could be the cause. The gears still go in their respective place, forward is still forward and reverse is still reverse.

Then my other problem which I think I self diagnosed, is this one.

I left the motor propped all the way up last night. As far as it will go without any obstructions. Then next morning when I went outside I saw the lube like that after a recent change because of the milkyness of it. I dropped the lower unit and looked for anything that could leak and I think this is it. I have no idea what it is called or how to fix it if I did diagnose it right.

By the way, don't mind the dates. They are wrong as you can probably tell. :D

The shift lever is bent. Easy job to replace it, no major disassembly required.

Looks like the oil is coming out the rectangular water bypass plate. To get there it has to be coming from the drive shaft seal which is below the water pump. That's not to say that it also isn't coming from the shift rod seal that you photo'd. Whatever, you are in for a reseal job, get them all while you are in there.

Thanks about the shift lever. About the oil, how easy is it to replace the shift rod seal?

Complete tear-down of the lower unit required for the shift rod seal.

Is the seals a beginner/novice fix? I don't think the shift lever is bent. What else could cause this. I will post pics after work.

Fortunately, there isn't too much to replacing the seals. A novice can certainly do it. However, its my least favourite job.

The shift seal is a pain, but is usually bad (in my experience) on those old motors. There are specialty tools out there, but I've had good luck removing the bushing above the shift seal by tapping threads into the bushing (with the shift rod out and the lower unit completely dismantled), placing my harmonic balancer puller across the top of the lower unit and threading a strong bolt through the puller and into the (new) threads in the bushing. As you thread the bolt into the bushing the head of the bolt is restricted at the balancer and the bushing is forced to pull up and out of the housing as you continue to thread the bolt in.

The drive shaft seal is a pain too, but I find that a cheap claw style bearing puller applied carefully will make short of work of it. BE CAREFUL not to damage the bearing housing that the seal sits in. It is a hard part to replace.

you have been given good advice about the seals,as for the shifter,it certainly looks bent,in fact looks like the aluminum pan looks bent too,as though it was .hit,or someone dropped the eng.its either the alum shifter ,the part it connects to or the rod that goues through the housing,BUT,if it works and you can live with it,live with it,alum will likely break ,maybe not,but its an old engine, you dont want to be looking for parts

I'm telling you the shift handle is bent. See how it leans toward the cover? It should be straight up and down. When you have to lay it down, as in the trunk of the car, either lay it on the back side or the side opposite the shifter. The other (steering handle) side can take it. The shifter bends.

I have a motor stand. Its an old saw horse that keeps the motor off the ground and is perfect for behind the garage door.

FR is right. The handle is definately bent in from being transported incorrectly. When I used to carry my motors in a car I used to put them gear shift down, but with the shifter centered in the hollow of a large foam doughnut. Now I have a truck and strap them down backside down.

Its never been laid down from my experience. Its always been stood up and it just started recently with this problem.

Maybe you didn't do it, but the lower cowl and shifter tell a different story.
