In Zanesville, an owner of a wildlife refuge of bears, tigers, lions, monkeys,etc.. opened all the cages and then killed himself. The local sheriff ordered his deputies to shoot to kill the animals. So far over 30 animals have been killed. Jack Hanna from the Columbus Zoo and other keepers went to tranquilize the animals. Due to the weather, they were unable to. I know the sheriff was protecting his community, but I think it was too quick of a judgement call. This will be on the national news.

I want some Lion steaks, and chetta chops. lol

It is a shame but this area is remote by many standards I'm not sure that they will ever get all the animals. I just think it will turn out badly either way. Remember the hog problem started by animals getting loose.

Last I heard, they are looking for a mountain lion, a black bear, and a monkey. All others are suppose to be accounted for. I hope they don't shoot the bear as they are in southern Ohio already. I've been told that it is illegal to shoot any black bears, however you are to report any that you may see.

Black Bear or Grizzly? I thought they said Grizz. Then they are pretty much committed to dispose of it on sight like they did others.... Don't need a Grizz roaming around Ohio...

Sometimes you have no choice. Just think of the outcry if a child is turned into grizzly food. The question is why was this "zoo" still populated with exotic, wild animals.

Report I saw indicated Blacks and Grizzlies. We have Black bears in Arkansas and have an annual hunting season for them. They were very prolific here until the 1920s, by which point over-harvesting had rendered them nearly extinct, but Game and Fish worked hard to restore the native population and imported some stock as well. Don't have any Grizzlies, but my daughter says I look like one. If there are any miniature giraffes on the loose I've got dibs. They's tasty.

Miniature giraffes tend to get stuck between the teeth.. Just saw on the news a wolf and monkey are all that's left to track down.........

Heading out to Colorado tonight for a little elk and mule deer hunt, might have to stop in Ohio for an exotic game hunt on the way!

Those animals were raised in captivity. If they cannot be captured and returned to captivity they will become unpredictably desperate for a food source. The Sherrif made the right call, sounds like he knows animals better than you think. I'd be willing to bet that the locals aren't taking any chances and are probably standing alongside the Sherrif. Jack Hanna's about as goofy as they come.

It is actually Herpes type B which is highly pathogenic in people. Hepatitis B is bad but Herpes type B is far worse with a mortality rate over 50%.

It was a sad story by the end of the day. The owner had committed suicide and the animals had all been killed except one. Jack Hannah said the sheriff made the right call to put them down.

I did get a funny picture in my head that the monkey was the last unaccounted for animal ... "you'll never take me alive, ha ha ha!!"

Now they say the little dude was probably a snack for one of the other animals.

Not all of the animals were put down...

All but one of the dead animals were shot to death. They included 18 rare Bengal tigers, 17 lions, six black bears, two grizzlies, three mountain lions, two wolves and one baboon. At least one animal, described by officials as a large cat, was struck by a car and then shot. The last of the escapees, a monkey believed to carry a potentially lethal herpes virus, apparently was eaten by one of the carnivores, Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said late Wednesday.

Six survivors ? three leopards, a grizzly and two monkeys ? were captured and taken to the Columbus Zoo.

Glad they saved a couple big cats. Im not a house cat person, but I've always enjoyed watching the big cats. Might even get to watch a few in person soon (catamounts/mountain lions), as they'll be sharing their domain with me during deer season in the Green Mountains...

Re: Ohio's New Game

With this event, I had a bad bad nightmare last night. I kept hearing loud cries and growling going on. I looked out the window in the darkness and saw these evil glowing eyes and huge fangs. I started to tremble and shake as it was my ex-mother-in-law :D Just glad it was a nightmare :D
