Re: Oil Coming Out Prop !! W/Photo !! PLEASE HELP

40:1 is too rich (too much oil). You went the wrong way. If you want to go lean (less oil), you need to go 60:1 or whatever you want. Personally I would get a 55 gal drum, drain all the gas out of the boat, and fill with the correct mixture. Run it for a while (moderately hard) in the water to get it up to temperature and if you still have a hot starting problem, then go after that. Whatever mixture is in your tank right now is a big mystery. Get it out and start fresh.

To get rid of the gas in the 55 gal drum.....Whenever your car/truck hits a 1/4 tank, put 5 galllons of the mystery gas in and then go to the gas station and fill up. You will dilute the 2 cycle oil to the point where it will do no harm to your car/truck (assuming your car/truck has a gas engine, don't do this if it has a Diesel engine). It will take a little while to get rid of the gas but at least you can be assured of not damagiing your outboard. I have and still do get rid of gas this way. Even gas that has had a load of water in it. Let the mixture sit for several days and suck the gas off the top of the water. The water and whatever rust/dirt/deposits are there settle to the bottom leaving good gas on top.

Good luck.
Dave

should i maybe mix 40-1 ?

The way I understand it, you will clog the catalytic converter

I've never had a problem. When it is heavily diluted, there just isn't enough oil to cause a problem. I could see a problem if you ran 50:1 thru your car all the time but that's not what I'm suggesting. Plus, 2 cycle oil for water cooled outboards is non-ash forming, so that won't clog the catalytic converter. I could also see a problem if you were trying to get rid of old crankcase oil this way but again that's not what I'm suggesting.

You are having the same problem I had (oil coming out of the prop) and here's how I fixed it:

1. First I totally rebuilt the lower units on TWO different O/B's because I couldn't believe that it was unburned 2 cycle oil. I was in denile!!!

Turns out it was unburned oil!!

2. Taking the advice of a O/B tech I:

Switched to OMC's 100:1 2 cycle oil, one step hotter sparkplug (from a NGK 9 to an 8) and 91 octane non-ethanol fuel. 87 (which I was using) is something like 10~15% ethanol.

I have a '79 Johnson also, although mine is a 15HP. The older O/B's just can't burn today's 50:1 oil w/ 87 octane ethanol fuel efficiently. Using the 100:1 oil is NOT a problem (in a older O/B) but you MUST fog the engine when you winterize otherwise rings and crank bearing will corrode/pit. The non-ethanol fuel helped a lot too. Making those 3 changes, cleared up about 90% of the dripping oil.

A little more on the oil; 100:1 vs. 50:1 is based on the additives in the oil itself. The 100:1 doesn't burn in the combustion cycle, only leaving enough to adequately lubricate. A greater percentage of the 50:1 oil is SUPPOSED to burn in the combustion cycle (but doesn't in an older O/B) and hence the start of your problem as well as mine. The reason the O/B mfgr's now recommend 50:1 (in a non-oil injected 2 cycle) is that owners don't always fog the engine after using 100:1 so they started recommending 50:1 and no need to fog the engine or maybe I should say fogging is less critical.

Some other things that effect the amount of unburned oil/gas after a day on the water are things like ignition timing (being too retarded) and whether or not the thermostat is installed and working properly. If your engine runs too cold (removing the t-stat) it'll aggrevate the problem.

If I were in your shoes, I'd drain the boat tank and start with fresh gas and 100:1 oil. I know it's the harder way to go but the results will be immediate.

The hard starting when warm is more-than-likely a carb issue.

Hope this helps save you time and money. Took me a longtime to catch-on.

During that time, I didn't think I had problems neccessarily, just expenses. If I threw enough money at my problems; I could ususally "buy" my way out of it!!

Thanks , im will try and pump out 15-20 gallons and fill it off with Non Ethanol
50:1 Mixture and hopefully this will help ....
I will get the carbs rebuilt in the winter , Im in South FL so temp never gets to cold to have to winterize it ...
I appreciate all the comments ...
Glad to know others have had this problem and solved it easy enough !!

I'd say you blew the accumulated carbon out of it. My 90 sat for a long time until I got it last Spring, and it took 5 or 6 trips to get the crud blown out of it.

I am using Pennzoil semi-synthetic tcw-3 and good gas only at exactly a 50:1 mix, and mine hasn't had any dribbles for a few trips.

I overoiled my Johnson 150 once(twice as much as needed) old age and CRS did that; anyway same picture as you have. Drain the tank; put it your lawnmower, car and anything else. Get fuel ratio correct and I think you will have solved your problem. Good luck.

No, don't put it in your car or anything else. If you have a two stroke weedwacker, burn it in that, give a bunch away, etc.

Burning 2 stroke premix in a car, is a good way to gum up a number of items in the system. Remember that fuel tanks and fuel systems in cars today, are just that - complex systems. The first thing that you can gum up is the fuel filter and the list goes on from there.

Sorry Jay, I know you're the Admiral and all, but I have to disagree with you about the pre-mix in a car. On a number of occasions and for a number of reasons I have run as much as 10 gallons of 50 to 1 mixed fuel through my 2002 Tracker or old 1997 Dodge Ram Pickup with ZERO negative issues arising.

I've used mixed gas in my Wheel Horse and Craftsman tractors and in my old Craftsman and new Honda push mowers without any problems or even noticeable smoking.
