Oil Extractors. What brand do you use?

Bought one of the cheap oil extractors from Harbor Freight almost a year ago and the pump gave up on it after sitting over the winter. It never was all that great. Either way, what brand of extractor does every get? Ive read many reviews and Ive got it narrowed down between these two:

http://www.amazon.com/Pela-Oil-Extractor-6-liter/dp/B0000BYO97

http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7400-...F8&s=automotive&qid=1270780161&sr=8-2-catcorr

Both are about the same price but the mityvac got a lot of bad reviews. Seals breaking down from syn oil, case cracking, etc. I need something that will be able to change oil in 5 engines each year and last a long time. The pela seems to be the best bet so far. One of the engines has the fitting that you can screw onto but Ive yet to find anything that would fit that.

I like this one. Pumps oil in AND out.
Very easy and clean, enough capacity for 2 V8 engines.

I use this one: About $50 cheaper then the one listed above. I like the one listed above but they didn't have one when I needed one. It is a Jabsco 12V.
Nice carrying handle and can be set flat or on end as needed. $139 at west Marine Probably available here on iBoats as well. Well no I didn't see one.

I would stay away from the $20 electric ones. I have tried a few and they just don't cut it, even with warm oil.

It makes it soooo much easier and quicker too if you warm the engine and oil up first.

I like the Mightyvac 7201. http://www.amazon.com/Mityvac-7201-Fluid-Evacuator-Plus/dp/B0002SR7TC

You hand pump the oil into the pump tank (2.3 gal). Then change filter and re-fill with oil. When done you select 'dispense' and hand pump the old oil back into the container that held the new oil. Works great.

Butch

I was checking that one out too. It has around 18 bad reviews and I really dont want to waste $71 if its just going to last a couple of years. We gonna be pumping out over 20 quarts of oil per year so it'll be used a lot.

That one also got bad reviews on amazon.

Gonna be kinda hard to put out $175 on the porta quick unit. Was hoping to keep it under $100.

the one i use looks like the mityvac one in the first post. mines a tempo brand though. used it since '03 w/o issue.
only thing i'd like better is if it'd suck up the fluids a little faster, but other than that it's been the best thing since sliced bread for oil extraction imho. i love the cleanliness about it. i've yet to make a mess using it. other than the filter removal.... recycling the oil is a breeze too. still no mess...

I second the Moeller. Solid design, works great, and is under $100.

I use the Big Boy topsider. works great, same concept as the moeller but its cheaper. Never spilled a drop and super easy to use.

The handle unscrews so its not as bulky as the pics to store in the garage. I forgot to add, the oil has to be warm for pretty much any of these pumps to work correctly. not hot, just warm.

Topsider; I've had mine for at least 10 years.Only regret is I should have bought the Big Boy as mine can't hold 2 engines worth of oil.

I also use the Moeller, although mine is called "Oil Bouy". I bought it several years ago and use it once a year. No problems. I do have to stop and dump it once during a "suck" as it holds 5 qts. Also, I have used it on a cold engine... it will work, but make sure you have a six-pack for the wait!

Re: Oil Extractors. What brand do you use?

I got the Mityvac 7400 last year and it worked well for me. Looks about the same as the Moeller others posted above. I learned the hard way not to leave oil in it for a long period of time (months) because it leaks past the pump seals and then comes out the breather hole in the shaft near the handle and makes a huge mess.

FYI, for anyone else that might have this problem, I found the easiest/cleanest fix was to remove the handle and push some tubing over the plunger shaft. Put the other end of the tube back into the holding tank and pump the shaft. Pushes all the oil out & back into the holding tank where you can easily dump it out.

I'm also curious what others are using to clean their pump's holding tanks when they're done. Acetone?

Re: Oil Extractors. What brand do you use?

Thanks for all of the replies. I ended up going with the 4L moeller pump. Its the only one that Ive found that comes with a garden hose adapter which is what one of our boats has. It only being 4L is kinda a down side but since were changing oil in so many engines we have to drain it often anyway.

http://www.wholesalemarine.com/pc/M...+Pumps/Moeller+Fluid+Extractor+4.0+Liter.html

I had a similar pump to the topsider(Was a different brand) but the pump went bad in it this spring. Went to change the oil and it would hardly pump at all. Only had it a year.

Re: Oil Extractors. What brand do you use?

I made the mistake of trying to save money on oil changing equipment. I went through 2 hand pump units. The seals tend to go on those easy. I then spent $50 on the unit that fits into your hand drill motor. Even a bigger waste. It never pulled more than a half quart out. Then on a recommendation I bought the Moeller pump for $50 or $60. I've couldn't be happier. Works great. Has a auto stop to prevent overflows. Very easy to use. For the price I spent on the others, I could have bought 2 Moellers.

Hmm, I kinda missed that one I guess. Ahh no worries. The one I got is exactly the same it just holds 2 less quarts. Ive never seen west marine have lower prices than somewhere else though.

Pretty excited to give this thing a try.
