Smell it if the engine was fogged it's probably fogged oil, if it's gear lube it will smell bad.

As stated above, the best way to tell is by smelling it. If you don't know what gear lube smells like, buy a quart as you'll need it when you change the lower unit oil prior to putting it away for the season. You should always change the lower unit oil prior to storing an outboard. It will also tell you if water has mixed with the lower unit oil.

If you suspect it is from the lower unit, I would go ahead and buy some new and change the fluid just to inspect... better to change it now and find out you have a bad seal, rather than find out when the unit fails because of no oil!

Mercury Super Duty or any GL-5 rated oil- A screwdriver and fill the unit from the bottom to the top vent screw

You need a quart of Lower Unit Lube, not automotive gear lube. WalMart has Mercury LU lube and also a plastic pump that fits a quart bottle and screws directly into the lower (drain) plug of the LU.

Acquire 2 net drain plug gaskets before you start the job.

Procedure is to drain all the old fluid. If it has water in it or is milky in color, have the LU serviced. (seals). Refill by pumping into the drain plug till it runs out the top. You'll lose about an ounce of gear lube when you remove the pump and install the plug. That's calculated into the procedure, and is about the head air space needed in the LU.

hope it helps

I only use Merc High Performance Gear Oil. It's synthetic and is an excellent water repellent.

Procedure:
Make sure the engine is in the down position. Put a container under the lower unit. Remove the oil fill screw at the bottom and the 'Vent' screw just above the anti-cavitation plate. Allow all the oil to drain out. If it looks milky, then it has water in it. Filling should be done from the bottom hole. Pushing the air out of the top hole. When you see oil from the top hole, put the top screw back in, then quickly remove the oil bottle from the bottom hole and put the screw in. Put new washers on both screws before putting them back in.
