Oil in on my impeller and impeller has no fins left?????

i HAVE A 1974ercury 650 with thunderbolt ignition and i droped the lu to change the impeller to find the impeller has no fins left on it and its saturated in oil. is that the gear oil? if so do i replace the gaskets before i put my new impeller on ? i did notice that one of the three nuts were loose could that of made it leak through? and what could of cause the impeller to loose all except for one of its fins? othere than that everything else looks good. there apears to be 2 gaskets with a metal plate that seperates them. any help would be great thanks

Did you just buy this motor? Was it sitting for years? Is there water in the drive oil?

about 3moths ago. the motor came with the boat. no it was used by previous owner this year. no theres no water in drive oil or it didnt apear to be any.

You need to find out where those broken impellar blades went.
First. I would do a compression check on the cylinders, before you go any further.

If the oil on the impeller stinks, it is gear oil. If it smells like regular oil or gas, it is residual fuel.

If it is gear oil, replace the waterpump base, base Oring, base gasket, wear plate and 2 gaskets and impeller. Sand all corrosion off driveshaft and oil it up so it won't ruin new driveshaft seal in water pump base. Also inspect waterpump cover for scoring. Replace it you see any.

If it is not gear oil, replace all gaskets seals and impeller and wearplate.

its gear oil for sure. thanks for the information. that helps alot. far as a compression test thats been done 125,135,135 and thats when its cool . the broken impeller pieces are alll oht. they went down to the water inlet cause when i took the scren off they were right there. i have it all cleaned up now getting to re asemble. thanks

You are a lucky man if you found all the pieces at the intake. most pieces end up stuck in the cooling ports in the engine.
I would still blow out the head to make sure you have no residual pieces up there. My .02

thanks i will do that. were do u put the air gun at to blow it out? i want to do that were i have it off. ur 2 cents is worth a million to me. anything to help keep my motor working its best. thanks agian
