Re: oil in the water... please read...

you need to do a little research before you start spouting nonsense you know nothing about. I am in no way an authority but know some--
1. there are several redundant blow out protectors (BOPs) on every well but these are damaged and not accessible now.
2.this was a freak accident -there are 4,000+ rigs in the GOM
3. this is a DRILL RIG- not a production rig- it would be 5 yrs away from effecting oil prices.
4. only 20% of the oil we use comes from GOM.
5. 11 men lost their lives
6. even Obama has cabinet members there to do everything possible.

before you cancel your vacations or sell your boats find out what is happening.
they are still running West offshore outta Venice fishing. I have fished Venice-Orange Beach , and vacation in Destin. Thing may go bad but please do not abandon these areas just yet.

1, Seems kinda coincidental then doesn't it? Not buying it myself, but you are right, I am not there, and don't have all the info. Seems to be like a fail safe or two may have been missing. Familiarity breeds contempt, do enough drilling and maybe a procedure or two might get ignored no?
2, Rigs are dangerous places, I dunno if it would be a 'freak' accident or just everyday human error.
3, Not a chance, we will see a jump in prices, I would bet good money on that, if only becuase of the media frenzy around this event will have oil execs rubbing their hands together. "Oh the horrors, the millions and billions of dollars of oil lost!"
4, No comment, I have no idea, I believe a large percentage of US oil actually comes in from Canada now. I could be wrong.
5, And the enviromental cost will be staggering as well.
6, Wonder what childrens story Bush is reading right this minute?:D

Warning: The views expressed in the post are purely emotional and have no basis in fact.

empco (exxon mobile pipeline corp) has a 20" underground pipeline carrying canadian crude to the refineries iin texas (I was part of the rehab and reversal project on that line a few years ago) This was a very big deal as it was the first one... they made plans to lay a 30" line right next to it but as far as I know that hasn't started yet

I live and work in Destin Florida and I have already noticed things slowing down. If the slick does make it here I will probably be out of a job:(

I really feel for guys!!!! I cant imagine how much this would suck in every aspect from fun in the sun to the guys whose lively hoods swim in those waters.!!

But your boating days arnt over:
Hook your boats up, take the drive up I-75 and drop in on the Great Lakes!! I know I wouldn't mind the extra traffic if it meant keeping the guys like your selves and your families on the water having a good time!
Lake Erie has some great fishing and great water!

Just wanted to let you know yes you are correct, the biggest import of oil to the US is from the Canadian sand fields.

last I heard was because of the type of oil it was. Burning works well with light crude but it is sweet crude. It does not burn well and since it is being dispersed from very deep it is being spread out over a very large area. This makes it very patchy.

I think they should at least try though. whats the worst that happens

they have done some test burns already , and it went well.....whats the hold up ? Those slicks should never have gotten as close as they are without them burning it off.

Re: oil in the water... please read...

Guys, this thread somehow escaped our scrutiny. Although it is 80% OK, there is a perfectly good Gulf Oil Spill thread in Dockside where you can discuss this evolving issue. I am going to lock this thread, but you are welcome to join the discussion there.

A reminder Politics will not be tolerated, and it was creeping into this discussion. I would call speculation on Enviro-terrorism as provoking political discussion. Bush has found his way into this thread for god knows what? Other examples can be found as well. Yes, we understand that some see these references as humorous, but someone else will see it differently.

We understand the passion, we understand that all of us need an outlet at times. We are highly monitoring the thread in Dockside and require that you stick to facts and questions that pertain to the cleanup effort. We will delete posts that get into the blame game, politics, enviro bashing, corporate bashing etc.

If you have questions, please review the Guidelines first, then you are welcome to PM me or any other Mod.

Thanks for understanding, Kevin
