oil leaking all in upper cowling

hello everyone
i have a 2005 mercuy 90hp 4 stroke and i recently changed out the whole water pump and did an annual service.(oil/filter-spark plugs-water/fuel filter).after doing everything i hooked up the water to the lower unit started thye motor up and let it run for about 10 mins and walked away.when i came back i noticed there was oil on the ground so i quickly shut everything down.i noticed that there was oil on the ground and the upper cowling was filled with about a Qt of oil which started to leak down,i have no idea whats going on or what couldve happened.looking to see if anyone on here had a same issue or close to it or knows any answers

Check oil filter for correct sealing and possible double seal rings..

Removed oil filter and there was only one o ring and to eye was sealing normally

I've run across filters that were defective and would not seal. Maybe try a different brand.
