ok i feel stupid asking this but i just bought a boat and it came with a full tank of gas (sweet!) now i assumed that it was mixed cause he was running the boat on it. i went to dump the gas into another container to use in the winter and it was a murky brown colour. i am used to my mixed gas being a nice blue colour. is it just another brand of oil or whats going on here

not a stupid question. Better to be safe than sorry. I am used to the blue color as well but can't say for sure it is bad gas--I am sure someone will chime in and give you a better answer.

More info needed. Can't actually read your mind to know what kind of boat and motor you're referring to. Inboard? Outboard? Pre-mix? Oil injected?

Re: oil mix question

I bought a 2-stroke OB and found the same thing. To my surprize I also found the motor was slick as a whistle inside, one of the rods was in a million pieces, and there was a big hole in the side of the block. Guess that's why he was happy to accept $20 for it....LOL. Guess I'll look closer next time.

Does your turn over smoothly? Have you run it yet?

First off, I assume its a 2-stroke OB or mixed gas would not be in the discussion. Sooooo, look and see if it has an oil tank. If its an oil injected motor the gas wouldn't be blue. If thats the case, murky brown gas indicates contaminated old gas, just before it turns green. If indeed its a premix motor, dump the gas and get some fresh before you attempt to start it.

I have never seen 2-stroke oil that wasn't blue...at least not in the last 40 years. Maybe somebody else has...

First thought that came to my mind was, brown is the color of the varnish that gums up everything fuel related.

If in doubt, dump it out!..."Murky Brown" doesn't sound very promising. Always fresh gas with Stabilizer like Stabil or Seafoam...:)

If it smells like gas, as opposed to varnished or spoiled fuel, but you're still in doubt about whether to use it, drain it into jerry cans and run it in your lawn mower, or depending on your location, your snowblower... Then start fresh in the boat.

Re: oil mix question

Mdern 2 cycle oil is dyed. I have seen green, blue, red, but there are likely other colors.

Murky brown is not a good color for gasoline, mixed or unmixed. If a non-detergent SAE-30 motor oil was used, the gas would look a bit brown, but not murky. However, modern outboards would not like that kind of oil.

Best to dump it out and figure out what to do with it.

Re: oil mix question

First ask seller what type of motor is it as stated by TX, then will know for sure which type of oil to use. Will add a yellow colored 2 stroke engine oil to the color list...

Re: oil mix question

it looks kinda different, but it is fresh gas, and new oil. the brown color looks wrong, but its all fresh stuff. im running it.if you doubt what you have, gas is cheaper than a motor.

Re: oil mix question

When it comes to the selecting the engine oil for your engine we can have plenty engine oil brands of different grades in market , I want to know how to find which is correct and recommend for a particular engine and how often I should change it.
