oil pressure

I have a 2000 SeaRay 215EC with a 5.0 mercruiser. The oil pressure gauge is pegged to the left when the switch is on. When the switch is off it returns up to 0. I used the schematics to determin what wire to check. I removed the wire on the guage from the sensor and tested with an ohm meter. with the key on it reads 215 and the same when the key is off. Oil changed last month and is fine. the engine runs fine and no alarms. does this indicate a bad sensor or bad guage? what else can I do to check? is it safe to operate the engine?

Re: oil pressure

the wire fitted to sender can be touched to your block and your gauge should swing all the way across to the max.if it does that proves your gauge and wire is good and it points towards the sender itself being faulty

You didn't mention what the gauge shows with the engine running...?

Sending units are very reasonable...that is where I would be headed, if this were mine.

Happy boating!

Re: oil pressure

Thanks for the replies. With the engine running the guage is pegged lower than 0. Where will I find the sending unit? Still safe to operate? This will not affect the low oil pressure switch if I am reading the schematics right. Am I correct in assuming this?

The correct OEM number for the sending unit is 815425T. You can get this at any Mercruiser dealer...but you could also go to NAPA for their replacement part.

Safe to operate? As long as you know that your oil level is good, you are probably OK. Your low pressure oil switch would be shutting down your fuel pump if your pressure was really low.

Happy boating!

Re: oil pressure

The sending unit is usually on the side of the block. It is a dome looking thing with a wire on the top of it. And like someone else said if it is grounded it will do some very strange things. So if you do change the oil sending unit trace the wire back and make sure it is in good shape..
Happy hunting.

Re: oil pressure

The wire from the sending unit should go to the terminal on your gauge marked "S".
