Ok back with some info on my 79 85hp

I pulled the plugs and all 4 are oily black on the threads and tip. The tips are black.

I haven't checked the compression yet.

I took the carb cover off... Shot a bit of of mix fuel in the carbs. She fired right up for about a 1 second then cuts off...

I pulled off the what I assume is the fuel filter (flat screen) it appeared clear..

Any thoughts????

Um, what does this relate to? It's better to stick with one thread so we don't have to go searching the forum to see what's been going on.

Compression check and spark check and go from there. A motor has three things it needs - compression, spark, fuel. Need to start eliminating whole systems from the list of potential problems or you'll be chasing your tail forever.

Been like that since you got it?
How old is the fuel?

cold start procedure:
Start with a known-good fully charged battery.
Open fuel tank vent.
Pump primer bulb until firm.
Lift hi-idle lever full up.
Hold key in (to choke) while turning it to "start".

If you're doing that and the engine doesn't start in just a few seconds, take the airbox off and observe whether the choke plates are closing off completely when the choke is engaged.

Proceed with compression test & spark test. Or do those first, they're quicker.

It has a manual choke. THe plates are closed. I am going to replace the plugs since its a cheap fix.. However, do I have fuel delivery problem if it only fires with mix shot in to the carbs directly? As soon as thats gone the engine dies..

Going to do compression testing as soon I get get my gauge today..

Ar you sure you are getting fuel? Are the plugs wet or dry after cranking?

The plugs appear to be a oily black... I tried the boats onboard fuel tank and a seperate fuel tank.. The carbs were replaced in the early spring as I am told... (its the newest looking thing on the motor; except for the starter)Also, how can I see if I am actually getting fuel in the carbs?

You could try draining the carbs. Every carb has screw or hex head screw covering the access to the main jet. It is usually at the side of the fuel bowl near the bottom. Once you drain it squeeze the primer bulb till morte fuel comes running out.

Jimmbo's got a good suggestion. If it only fires when you spray fuel into the carbs, you have a fuel delivery issue. You can also keep squeezing the fuel hose primer bulb-this will force fuel around the pump into the carb bowls. The blacked plugs could be from running cold-thermostats might be stuck open.

Re: Ok back with some info on my 79 85hp

Compression is good... Its in the 130-140's in all 4 cylenders.

I have only checked the fuel system up to the filter/pump and up to the tee. the screen had a little particulate debris... I cleaned that and while it was off gave the bulb a squeeze.. I get fuel to that point... I replaced the filter cover and give the bulb a squeeze and it gets rock hard. Pulled the fuel line from bottom of the tee. Gave it a squeeze, positve fuel to the tee. Reconnected squeeze rock hard.

Removed the screw that I believe from the previous poster.. No fuel came out and still could not squeeze.. Rock hard..

Also, I have an image of what I believe to be the pee tube. Yet its disconnected and I don't see where it goes!!!! My manual still hasn't arrived yet..

That is your tell tale tube. It should run to a little plastic white elbow coming off the rear of the motor, then to the nipple at the base of the cowl. Make sure that the nipple isnt clogged with debris or spider webs.

thats the strange part.... I have looked all around the length of hose in both directions.. No obvious place for it to go...

the screw you have marked in the photo - that's on the carb body...you need to remove the drain plug from the bowl below.

Look at the base of the bubble back exhaust cover. If there's no fitting there, someone probably replaced it with an earlier cover.

Re: Ok back with some info on my 79 85hp

Somethings amiss here. A 79 85 hp does not have a bubble back exhaust. Any possibility that this is a replacement powerhead? I don't see the coil supports on the heads. This may be an older 135 block, since there is no water telltale. Are there any stamped markings on the core plug on the top of one of the heads to help identify this block? The drain screw jtexas is referring to is the brass-looking one, just below the other one you refer to.. Unscrew it. This should drain the carb bowl at that point. Prime the fuel bulb, and fuel should come out in pulses identical to your squeezing. If you get no fuel out, your carbs are candidates for removal/teardown and overhaul.

I got no fuel out of the brass screw either.. As far as the stamping on the block.. I will check when the suns comes up...
