Re: Ok back with some info on my 79 85hp

Somethings amiss here. A 79 85 hp does not have a bubble back exhaust. Any possibility that this is a replacement powerhead? I don't see the coil supports on the heads. This may be an older 135 block, since there is no water telltale. Are there any stamped markings on the core plug on the top of one of the heads to help identify this block? The drain screw jtexas is referring to is the brass-looking one, just below the other one you refer to.. Unscrew it. This should drain the carb bowl at that point. Prime the fuel bulb, and fuel should come out in pulses identical to your squeezing. If you get no fuel out, your carbs are candidates for removal/teardown and overhaul.

When I went on the online parts catolog it was showing the bubble back housing... So I don't know

I just found it odd that the tube and outlet were there...I will look into adding the tell tale port...

Thats why I asked.

I wonder what that engine really is... as mention earlier, no 85 came with a bubble back. It can be added with some machining of the block. The block is black, but the linkage arm is white, usually they are painted together. Perhaps a late 115/110 was used as a replacement. If so, I wonder if the exhaust tuner was also changed.

The air siliencer is pre 1985

The black engine is typical of the block paint color on the later 115/110 engines, but there are no coil supports on the head, and no telltale fitting.. Perhaps a pre-telltale engine-an old 135 or early 140, painted black. They had the coil bracket on the top of the block. It has the correct airbox for a 79, but is missing the 4 plastic extentions. mdmedicgod: take the airbox off and look at the numbers on the front flange of the carbs. There is a number cast into that flange that says the diameter of the throats of the carbs. This is an indication of the hp and fuel that will flow through the engine (hp rating.) It will read something like: 1 5/16.

well, since i have been poking around this boat and things don't appear as they should. I have decided to take it somewhere..

i know compression is good. I know i am gettin fuel in the carbs. So I have some knowledge to go to repair shop and not get screwed to bad!!!

now that there is some doubt to power head type. I am curious what the johnson shop tells me....

Re: Ok back with some info on my 79 85hp

Here is an update... I have got the motor running and she sounds good and stong on the start up and underload... I do have a question or two still:

1. When I first start it up she idles nice smoothe sounding. However, after running her close to WOT and run her at idle and the place her in neutral it sometimes sounds like she is getting a little starved for fuel and then cuts out... It will fire right back up though. What I do to combat this issue is to lift the "warm up" lever just a little bit till I hear the RPM's pick up just a bit.

Anthoughts, on whats causing the issue and how to cure it?

2. Also, here is a stupid question.. I understand the Fuel ratio and how to get it my question is. If I add more fuel to the tank (if not run empty) do I need to add enough oil to match the added fuel?
