ok, so what are the deflectors?

The reason I ask is that I picked up a motor for a wood hull I am refurbing, a '79 E'rude 100hp. The p/h had a crack in the water jacket below hole #4. Upon pulling heads I found 2 pieces of rubber hose, maybe 1/4"-5/16" od and 1.5"-2"long stuffed in the water jackets of the block under the head. They looked like they lhad been siliconed in place at one time, but then so had the split in the water jacket. I assumed they were part of an elaborate system to fix the leak without pulling the p/h. Boring story short...are those the deflectors? And if so should I replace them. I ran the motor in tank for an hour last fall and seemed ok.

Yep....those are the deflectors. They keep the water flowing around the head in particular pattern for cooling. If they still fit REAL tight, they should be ok. DON'T use silicone to hold them in place. If unsure....replace them.

Re: ok, so what are the deflectors?

OBJ...I couldn't find any reference in the manual to the placement of these deflectors...I think when I removed them there placement was centered top and bottom, and there was 2 of them. I should go to the J/E dealer and get the hose? Or can I just go to local auto parts and find something that works? I find no reference in any of my manuals so a little help with size and placement would be helpful...Thanks

Go to the Johnny/Rude dealer and get them. They may have them in stock....maybe. Part Number 322411....about $2.50 each. You'll need four.

Look between the cylinders (with the heads removed) and you will see nubs cast into the casting. Same thin below the bottom cylinder. The deflectors will go between the nubs. Don't know what else to call them other than T*ts.

Is your service manual OEM or generic. The OEM manuals show where they go.

Keep us posted.

Make sure that you clean the crud out of the water passages. They are a tight fit so lightly cover them with dish soap when inserting the new ones. When you think they are all the way in but the end seems to stick out a tad push in with a punch the same diameter as the deflector.

Hey SoLittle...this motor has less than 50 hrs run time and the waterjackets are shinier than than a new boat at the boat show, but I had to weld the jacket under the #4 hole so that scrap of hose may not fit into place...hope that's not a problem...tanks

I bean to the dealer and have the new head gasket, but he was no help on the deflectors, or their placement...his book don't show where they go. He did say that 5/16" fuel line would work and I have some of that. If someone could help me with the placement I would be greatful...tanks

I'm just a little confused here Thought....did the dealer tell you to use 5/16 fuel line for the deflectors? Or did I miss something in the original post....sorry for the confusion.

Re: ok, so what are the deflectors?

You heard that right OBJ...the ones I took out came out real easy and looked like vacuum hose. If you have any better suggestions I'm listening.
I don't know of anywhere I can order these online and locally is a joke. I still havn't figgered out exactly where they go...only 2 nubs...on upper cyl at 8 o'clock and at 10 o'clock on lower cyl...best I can describe...I could take a pic but don't know how to post it...tanks again

Re: ok, so what are the deflectors?

I have a pair of 87s but I would think that yours would be the same. There are two deflectors per bank. One goes between the upper and lower cylinder in the water passageon the outside of the water passage. The other goes on the bottom of the water passage by the lower cylinder also on the outside.

I have seen a number of posts here that strongly recommend using the OMC part and not a vacume or other hose. OBJ has even given you the part number.

My OEM manual also shows where they go.

Re: ok, so what are the deflectors?

Well OBJ and SoLittle, I'm convinced. I'll chase down the right parts somewhere...it's still winter here so no big rush.
If I were to guess SoLittle that's where I would have placed these parts because that's the location of the nubs (The dealer said that didn't sound right). So glad to have your help, without it I would never get anything done...tanks again.
