Hi Guys,

I have an older 70's 40hp evinrude that works excellent. This summer when I went to put it in the water it would go in reverse fine, but wouldnt go into forward. When I took it out of the water I was able to put it in forward and reverse but it is really sticky and hard to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Need a little more information, model number, was the engine running, do you have remote controls or are you shifting at the engine, any water in the lower unit?

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

sorry I'm not around the motor at the moment. Engine was running, controls at the motor and I did not see any water in lower unit however the person who had it before me might of not put enough fluid in the lower unit. That would cause hard shifting right? He tried to explain to me that he took out a bolt that holds the fluid and something dropped down covering the bolt whole. Hard to explain in writting. I'm bringing the boat home this weekend and will be able to post more info on the motor. All I know at the moment is that its a 40hp evinrude from the 60's or 70's. Worked good last season but this season wouldnt go into forward gear and when it did it was hard to put in.

If he removed the phillips head screw to drain the lower unit, the pivot for the shift dog might have fallen out of place. The phillips head screw should never be removed unless you are overhauling the lower unit.

You are going to have to try and get the screw and pivot realigned. If you look at a parts breakdown of your motor you will see the pivot screw has a pivot pin on the end. This pivot has to go through the pivot that holds the shift dog.

Go to BRP parts
web site, go to the parts section and find your motor. There are several places on line that will show parts breakdown for your engine, after messing around for a while you might find one you like better, they all show the same things, just some might be easier to use.
If you plan to do the maintaince on your engine I would suggest you get a factory manual, will ansewer a lot of questions and help trouble shoot problems.

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

I just bought the motor off a friend who is not mechanically inclined, when he put the screw back in and put excessive force on it, would it damage the shift dog, cradle or lever? the reason i say this is because he tells me that "it doesnt make a tight seal" meaning possibility of stripping the thread. Next question, is there thread on any component internal or is just like a pin that connect all the shifting parts? I'm going to pick it up this weekend and the problem I mentioned is what he explained to me. I also agree a manual is a great tool and trust me I plan to purchase if the motor is salvageable! Thanks for all the help guys

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

I don't know if you could put enough force on the phillips head screw to cause any damage. Most likely the pivot pin portion of the screw is hitting the shift dog carrier. The screw has threads and the housing is threaded and the screw is sealed with an o-ring. The hard part is to realign the carrier so that the screw will go in properly. I have had success using an ice pick or a dental pick to move the carrier back in place. You just have to take your time and hold your tounge in just the right position. Once you git in NEVER EVER take it out again.

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

do I have to take all the bottom apart like in the part diagram to get at the clutch dog or is there another access point to help line everything up??

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

Without tearing it apart the only access will be through the phillips screw hole. It can be realigned through the screw hole, it just takes some patience.

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

Hi Guys, so after taking the motor off and home I got the serial Number and model numbers off of it. What year is it? Serial Number and Model number might be backwards, not sure.
Serial # C98414
Model # 40954d

It started 4th pull and seemed to run good other than it wont go into Reverse. He did take that sh*t screw out and put it back in but not completly back in therefor theres salt water in the lower end. Someone told me put a little gas threw it to clean it out good true?
Thank Cmo18

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

The easiest way to fix it is to lie the engine on it's side. And as mentioned, get an awl or small pick and get someone to wiggle the shifter back and forth until you can get the carrier lined up with the pick. It's very doable, it just takes a bit of time. If you're engine is on the boat and all hooked up it'll be a pain to remove it. You can try doing it vertical. I never have. In theory you should be able to do it.

After that if there's salt water in it, drain the LU oil. You can flush it with something like kerosene or something but personally I would not bother as it wont get everything. I'd just refill with new oil.

If you're doing it vertical you will have to drain it. If it is sideways you're probably ok.

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

And I see no 40954 in my books. A 40554 is a 1975 40hp, is that possible?

Re: Old 40hp evinrude

maybe, ill check again, I got these number off a plate in the front. Thanks everyone for your help Ill let ya know how I make out with that bolt. What type of gear oil do you guys prefer to put in?

I have one other problem. When we were pulling the boat back the whole hub assembly on the trailer came off and passed my truck lol. So thats why I only have the motor. Anyone ever put a bearing in the hub and then permanently weld the whole hub back onto the axle?
