I'm looking at an old Evinrude and was hoping someone here could help me with an ID. The serial number (I think) of the motor is 4424-43319.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Old Evinrude - Now w/ Pictures

Ok - so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on this motor. The seller gave me a "just get it outta here" price, so I took it!! When I pulled the starter chord it gave a healthy thunk-thunk, so I'm hoping the compression test turns out well. I ordered a service manual from Cook (Thanks TD!:D) and I think I found a place that has the odd impeller in WI.

So here are some pictures of the motor. Overall condition is in GREAT shape in my opinion.

One of the sprung cam screw is missing on the port side.

It has a cool flip-up gas fill and check out the glass fuel guage.

Pictures continued:

Inside of the port side cowling. The missing cam screw can be seen more easily here. It still has the maintenance instructions that include:
-How to clean the sediment bowl.
-How to replace the sheer pin.
-How to gap the spark plugs.
-How to adjust the points.

The motor has the 'old school' wires and spark plugs. Instead of a boot you screw clamp the wire leads to the plugs.

The sediment bowl is also missing from the motor. It should be under the carb on the right. I think the tube on the left might be an exhaust.

Check out the on-board tool kit! It includes a spark plug wrench, 2 sheer pins and a cotter pin. According to the maintenance instructions it also once had a .020 "breaker" gauge and a .025 "spark plug" gauge. Too cool!

Last is the lower unit. The skeg doesn't have any marks and the prop is in great shape and it still has the rubber boot too.

I have two other motors on the "stand" now, but I'm dying to dig into this one when a spot opens up! I need to wait for the service manual anyway I guess. Maybe I'll build a stand while I'm waiting...HMMM...

Re: Old Evinrude

thanks for the pictures, it's nice to see that your motor came with the spark wrench and spare drive parts, they often got lost in the drink. the handle should unscrew to a screw driver. the impellers, yes there are 2 of them are weird, they kinda looks like 3 legged spider. there was a guy on ebay selling a bunch. On my motors, the gas shut off valve unscrews and there's was a sediment screen built into it. have fun, they're nice running motors.

Your motor is in beautiful shape. According to the model/serial number it is a longshaft (4424) built in the early part of 1949 (43,001 - 80,000).

I'm glad to see that it has the gas cap.

The length of the leg from the powerhead to the prop tells you whether it's short or long shaft. Long shaft motors are made to run on boats with deep transoms...20 inches or more.

In addition to what tmcalavy said, the model number 4424 denotes longshaft whereas 4423 is short.
