I have an old evinrude that i recently picked up. The owner said it was a 1946. Model is 4404. Can anyone tell me what year it is and what fuel oil mix it is? Also if you can think of anything else that might be helpful let me know.
Thanks

Looks like it is 16:1 oil mix, made from 46 to 48 if I read right. Some might be able to tell actual year from the serial number.

It's a Zephyr model, 5.4hp, the smallest 4-cylinder outboard ever made. Smooth runners, although the carb can be tricky.

WOW a four cylinder 4.5 horse engine. Now that is interesting... Those pistons have to be really tiny...

Serial number up to 25,000 is a 1946
Serial number 25,001-40,000 is 1947
Serial number 40,001-up is 1948

Pistons may be small, but carburetor is big.

well, may want to tread gently. What's it going to take to make that a runner? need to get it pumping -- impeller for it? That one may not be a runner (restoration and display model, maybe). Just saying....

one thing to get a 65 Johnson up and running, but not sure about that one. Sounds pretty rare. Don't tear into it before some more input/research.

Also what type of fluid do i put in the lower unit? I had a 1950's british seagull and it took SAE 140 gear oil. Is that the same for this?

Not rare they show up on craigslist pretty often. They are a PIA if they don't run right. The carb is overly complicated almost like the engineers fell over themselves designing it. Good news is there are quite a few parts out there for them and as long as you have spark half the battle is won. Pretty sure the lower unit takes grease. You can find a lot of information about them at the AOMCI website you may want to become a member.

My 1939 evinrude 22.5 takes grease in the lower.Your impeller may be like mine which is made of metal not rubber, which looked after, will last virtually forever.

What type of grease? Does anyone think it would benifit me to clean the carb? There was no old gas in it or anything.

Anther thing i thought of was what oil should i use in the premix? Should i just use standard marine 2-cycle oil?

Hold on there for one sec.If you have a zephyr ,my old manual says evinrude outboard oil is also recommended for the lubrication of sportsman, sportwin, and zephyr fisherman drive gear housings!Back in the day evinrude recommended s.a.e.40 such as mobiloil outboard.I would got to the antique outboard site and find out exactly what the fellas use ,or go to a show and pick the brains of those good people.

If the prior owner is still available to you, why not try to get as much info from him if you can -- assuming he didn't just pick it up somewhere with the idea of flipping it. He may be your best first source.

The previous owner was just trying to get rid of it not really knowing a whole lot about it (thats why i got it for $50). Do you know if i can use TCW-3 2 cycle oil? If you dont know i will probably stop by my local evinrude dealer and see if they know anything.

for use of 2-cycle oil in fuel, you can switch modern TCW-3 oil for non-detergent regular engine oil used in 1946. You use the same proportion of oil to gas (probably 16:1). This is standard procedure for period outboards. I do not know what oil is used in the lower unit of that Zephyr (apparently some question there). Somebody suggested going to the AOMCI site and posting questions, and I agree with that, although many members are represented here too.
