Hi all. Inherited an old boat with this 80hp Merc. Have worked on cars before. It sat for 3 - 5 years. Luckily the battery only needed a charge and was still good. Took off the cover and some of the wires were really brittle. Especially the small one for number 4 which I think is from the trigger? Insulation cracked and came right off and the copper looked a bit green so I very carefully wrapped them with some electrical tape for the test. Got a flush kit connected to the hose. Mixed up some fresh fuel with just a touch extra oil since it sat so long. The motor started up on the first crank. Ran a little rough, maybe just the extra oil or a misfiring cylinder. Bottom unit lube was good and it shifted OK.

So is the a way to repair or replace any of that wiring without pulling the flywheel? What else might i need to look at to get this thing running smooth again while I decide whether or not to sink money into a new transom and floor for the boat.

tnx

The small wires on the coils either go to ground (black) or back to the switch box and both can be made up very easily as they have ring connecters on both ends.
