Hi folks. This is my maiden voyage on this sight.Im hoping to find some info to fix my outboard.I recently purchased a 10 hp ,1963, Evinrude Sportwin.I replaced the coils, points and condensors. It starts great, but,it doesn't want to idle in slow. Also,it won't rev up properly. The spark is strong(30,000 volts on each cylinder)with 70psi compression in each cylinder.Another very concerning issue is the amount of smoke it generates and the oil in the 45 gallon drum that it leaves.I will not put it in the waterways because i won't pollute our resources.Could this be a carburation problem?Does this motor have sufficient compression? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's a two cycle engine running at idle. If you feel strongly about pollution, leave it the the garage, and get a sail boat.

Yes,thank you R.Johnson for your reply.I simply stated that I was concerned about the excessive amount of unburned oil and fuel that this engine was leaving in my test barrel, hense,my reluctance to wanting to use it in our waterways until it is burning in a cleaner capacity, and you come back with a snide reply like that. Thanks for the welcoming to iboats boating forums R.Johnson, and I hope that you don't welcome all newcomers to this forum in this manner.

First thing I would do would be to clean and adjust the carb, then check the plugs for oil fouling.

I would also check the manufacturer's compression specs - sounds to me like your rings might be gone.

First, make sure the needle valves (jets) are adjusted properly. Here's an article by one of our guru's, Joe Reeves, in the FAQ section. It describes setting engines with 1 adjustable needle valves as well as those that have 2. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

70psi is a little low. In that same FAQ section is a post on how to decarb your motor. Many recover some compression with that procedure.

Finally, make sure you're mixing your fuel correctly. A 1963 should be mixed at 24:1, 87 octane gas to TC-W3? outboard oil. You may want to use synthetic TC-W3? outboard oil, as it produces less smoke and is somewhat biodegradeable.

All I can add that hasn't been said is that I switched to Amsoil at 24:1 in my old outboards and so far it appears to be smokeless and doesn't leave a sheen on the lake.

My advice is reset/rebuild the carb, do a decarb and try a synthetic oil.

Re: ole smokey

Maybe a little lack of tact by R. Johnson, but I think what he was trying to say is that it is normal for it to smoke a lot and to leave an oil slick. It will be far less noticeable on a boat than in that drum. Try it on a boat and see what you think. If it is poorly running, it will be messier than normal, but you will never get rid of the smoke and mess with that motor, or any other motor of that vintage. That's just the way they were.

100% Synthetic TC-W3 oil will cut down on the smoke a whole lot. And they claim it is bio-degradeable to take care of the rest. It's what I use.

Re: ole smokey

Thank you all for your input.I ran my 15 horse johnson in the barrell just prior to working on the ten horse and was shocked with the difference in the exhaust . My 15 horse is a 1973 and i ran it for ten minutes or so and it left little scum on the surface of the water. When i put the evinrude in the barrell the next day i was shocked at the difference. Both were run on the same tank of fuel, but i was told that these engines run on 40/1 ratio.I guess i need to investigate these fuel mixtures further.I will certainly look into these synthetic oils further too.Firstly i will do the carbs and see where that takes me.Once again ,thank you all very much for your time in this forum, and im sorry if i seemed quick tempered in my reply to you R.Johnson,it certainly is not my intention to be rude.

Relax...the 2 stroke oil we have been putting in the water for well on 80 years (remember..oil floats), is as noticeable as the billions of pounds of rubber of car tires laying on the side of highways..natures does a better job of neutralizing than any asinine politician cramming junk in your head..
Believe me..we ALL will evolve JUST fine....been doing it just fine for eon's, regardless of Al Gore..
