OMC 115hp J115PXEEM

My neighbor and I started chatting about boats and mentioned that his was acting up. I offered to take a look and what I saw was odd. He put in a set of plugs about 20 hours ago and the new ones are really dirty and the boat is running poorly.

I don?t know this motor really well but he says that he put new fuel filters Raycor / inline glass and OMC all new with new fuel line. The bad news is that I can see a tiny flake of that varnish looking stuff that E-10 is known to pull off a tank in the in line filter.
The boat has been running great for about 2 years.

Here is what I know:

All 4 plugs are equally dirty / fouled out.
He runs a long no wake zone 30-60 min till he can get up and go
There may be junk coming loose in his tank. The filters may have caught it but I don?t know.
Lots of oily goo dripping from the prop

My gut says dirty carbs with stuck floats and / or stuck open t-stats.

What do you guys think? Are there any known things to look for on this particular motor?

Re: OMC 115 Fouling plugs out

and what number and gap sparkplug does he have in the motor?

Does the ingnition system jump a 7/16" gap to prove that it has enough output for normal running?

What temperature does each cylinderhead idle at?

How many turns out are the idle mixture needles?

What oil is he using and how is the oil comsumption?

When was the last time the motor was decarboned?

I think you should follow Seahorse's list. Mainly about mtr temp and open spark gap.

Thanks for the reply, This is what I know:

I'll check the #'s on the pulgs tonight.
I'll put it on the tester tonight to see if it will jump.
I have a lazer temp gauge but I'll have to throw a new set of plugs in to get temps.
I haven't touched the carbs yet. I don't think they would be out of setting from the last 2 years but I can check.
Oil is an issue, he is using Walmart TCW-3, Most folks back here with this long no wake zone do better with Pensoil synth blend.
My money is on never been decarbed. I have a few cans of Seafoam leftover from my 2 stroke days.

Anyone know what the correct pulgs and gap are for this motor? He may have the wrong ones in there.

Thank you! That is handy!

Based on that chart, and my eyeballs that is the narrow 60deg block and the plug should be a Q178yc gaped to .030

Plugs that are in it are NGK BPZ8HS

Here is what I found out tonight.

T-stats are clean and closed when cold. We fired up the motor and the heads got right up from 70deg F to 170F in about 4 min while running on the muffs.

Spark jumps 7/16" inch gap no problem

Smoking like a freight train.

I didn't mess with the mixture screws yet.

I am starting to suspect the VRO is running ritch on the oil..
Ideas?

Going to throw a new set of champion plugs in it and keep an eye on oil burn. In the interm,

How many turns out should the idle mixture screws be out on this motor?

Initial setting is 5 3/4 turns. Put mtr in the water to get back pressure in the exhaust and then use your ears when adjusting for the best idle. Or else watch your tach.

Air leak in the fuel side.Check with a screw driver on vro pump and count the clicks.rapid click air leak or pump diaphram failure.

Could you point me to a post on how to "Check with a screw driver on vro pump and count the clicks."

Hey.... You might be on to something here....

The guy just put all new fuel lines on with all kinds of zip ties on the lines vs ss hose clamps...

With the motor running get a long screwdriver and put one end on the pump housing and the other end to your ear.You should be able to hear the clicks.Should click around every 15 or so seconds.

Re: OMC 115 Fouling plugs out THANKS! iBoats FIXED!

So we took a crack at this motor again today and I think we got it fixed.

I started looking for an air leak in the fuel side of the VRO and found a few.

First we took all the zip ties off the fuel lines and replaced with SS hose clamps. There was a serious air leak at the output hose at the spin on fuel filter.

The second air (and Fuel leak) we found kinda by accident. While pumping up the bulb we noticed a raw gas smell and a drip under the motor. A quick inspection of the fuel system showed a leak right on the VRO where the plastic catch screen / filter screws in under the 90 deg fitting. This had been swapped out a while back and the O-ring had been pinched.

Once those leaks were taken care of and the excess oil burned off, it was running great.

Thanks to all, I had on idea how sensitive these VRO systems were to air getting into the fuel lines.

Thats a typical problem, wrong clamps.

SS hose clamps are incorrect too, but better than the zippies.

Heres the fix with the correct clamp.

And this a good example of how the VRO system can save an engine from melting a piston due to air leaks, it adds oil whereas a straight pump cannot.
