You have to remove the powerhead, then disassemble the engine to repair the piston and cylinder.

At a minimum, you will need a gasket set and you should hone all of the cylinders and replace all of the rings. You should expect to have to buy at least one new oversized piston and rings.

You will want to at least have the boring done at a properly equipped outboard shop, so you will need to find what your local shops charge.

It will require a lot of work on your end if you don't want to spend a fortune having a shop do it, but it's do-able for sure, you just need a factory manual, some friends, and probably a 12 pack or two for their time. A v6 is a lot heavier than a 3cyl (which is what I'm working on). Disassmble the blocks as far as you can, then take them to the machine shop. My total bill for having a cylinder bored ".030 over and the other two honed, and also removing a broken bolt from the block was $99. And just FYI, you don't have to go with OEM parts since they likely only come in one size over. Other places, like Wiseco, sell good parts as well and their sizes (for example) were ".020, ".030, and ".040. If it's worse than that you will need to resleeve it. I'm waiting on parts right now to start the rebuilding process.

Re: OMC 175 BAd overheat, is it all done now?

i ran my 150 crossflow thru same stuff it was fairly fresh
warped one head tore up two holes skirts collapsed,
cracked two liners ,warped thermo covers said and done it was cheaper for me to buy donar block replace one piston bore one hole and replace all rings and gaskets, than to build the badly overheated block
i also bought a 175 powerhead on ebay for 400 dollars complete minus elecs with comps at 100 across the board it is now running on my mid while i finish the build on donar block, may not remove runs very good for 400 dollars,
for drop on may sell donar with parts and machine work done or whole motor pm me 1983 175 running good comps complete

I will now attempt to run this motor until the S*#t hits the fan and I'm already looking for a new used one. If anyone has a good used motor in the 150-225 hp range in south Florida, let me know. thanks for everyone's help, removed lower unit again, took out new thermostats, reverse flushed everything and motor is now cooling just fine. Now if I can only find a used rectifier/regulator for this motor since I am reluctant to spend nearly $200 for a new one with the chance that this motor will only run a short while. Thanks again for everyone's help, especially MikeSea and Tashasdaddy. This is a great forum...

Re: OMC 175 BAd overheat, is it all done now?

I am only willing to put a few dollars into this engine. As I said, it is a 1985. I do realize it will spin apart in who knows how long but at that point I'll tear off the lower unit and list it on Ebay, take out the starter, electrical etc and part out what I can. I don't see any sense in doing more than that. To start pulling it apart to rebuild is looking to break bolts and end up with a money pit. I'm now looking for a new motor, something off a repower here in the keys or even up to south Florida. I realize I take my chances with anything that is not new but I'll look carefully and try to be the judge of what I am buying and who I am buying it from. I hate seeing ads for motors that "blew a rod in 200 huors" and has a new power head or "has a completely rebuilt lower unit". Good motors, properly taken care of, have delivered well over 1000 hours to me in the past. I am now looking for a 150 to 225 hp used.
