Re: omc 3.0 shift problems

I'd recommend getting OEM Cobra Service and Parts Manuals for your setup (often available on eBay).

But do I recall you mentioning in another post that you had a Clymers already? See page 398-399 w.r.t. testing your ESA switches.

If they work correctly, the five step adjustment procedure outlined in the Stuart Hastings link should make sure they're kicking on & off at the correct time when shifting. And what is your idle set at (in RPMs)? Too high an idle speed has been known to cause shifting problems.

Like bruceb said, problem is probably behind the transom, but I'd at least double check the things above before pulling the drive, especially if the guy who replaced your shift cable really knew what he was doing....

Remember, I'm a novice, so take any advice from me with that in mind.

Re: omc 3.0 shift problems

When you are in the water, is it harder to put it into gear or take it out of gear? The ESA really only helps you taking it out of gear because of the angle of the shift dogs that are engaged. Do you feel the engine bog a bit as you shift out of gear?

Does your boat have the upgraded shift dogs with the increased angle?

What RPM are you idling at?

Is the forward to neutral force the same as the reverse to neutral?

A big problem here is that diagnosing a problem on the internet is tough because it is a "touchy feely" kind of a thing. You probably have no idea what good feels like and a person that would know exactly what it's supposed to feel like is not there.

the force is about the same in forward and reverse, and it does not bogg down when i take it out of gear i also did not upgrade the shift dogs, when i put the new esa module on it was doing the same thing as the old one i contacted the people i bought the new module from through email and never got any reply from them so i just marked them off as a bad company to deal with! i have been buying parts from a marine salvage in st. pete florida he useualy has what i need and cheaper than anyone else

Re: omc 3.0 shift problems

The reason I asked you about the shift dogs is that the increased angle caused them to be a little tougher to disengage. Shift dogs were only replaced if they were done under warranty or your dog clutch wore out and was replaced.

You need to get your ESA working properly. Make sure your idle is at spec.

Do all the things mentioned earlier in this thread and....good luck!

Don't know what else to say!

Re: omc 3.0 shift problems

You could have good ESA components, but if they are not engaging at the right position in the shift cycle they don't help anymore than if they were bad.

Before taking it to someone else for help, I'd check these easy things first. 1) idle speed 2) that the ESA components are good (easy to do, and both the Clymers and OEM Service Manuals outline how to do that fairly clearly). 3) the 5 point adjustment procedure as outlined in the Stuart Hastings doc. This will ensure the ESA components are engaging at the correct time in the shift cycle.

Like Bruce said, if that doesn't do it, you may be into something bigger than what it sounds like you want to tackle by yourself (like pulling the outdrive). But if you do, there is plenty of info in the iBoats archives for this thread. Do a search using the terms 'cobra' 'OMC' and 'shift'.

Good luck.
